    A Question about Posting Behavior —John Neal
   I have had this question in my mind since Todd initiated the color-coding for responses in a thread: when someone replies to a post, why doesn't the number of arrows correspond to the text of the poster? For example, if someone named Sensible Party (...) (18 years ago, 14-Dec-06, to lugnet.admin.general, FTX)

   (...) Well, the reason is because "Sensible Person" didn't actually write the text "In lugnet.admin.general, Sensible Party wrote:", so it's not really something that they said.      (...) Well, there's a little more to it, actually. Basically, you need the code to figure out what's what. Since LUGNET was designed to work with SMTP and NNTP, the exact string "In lugnet.xxx.yyy, ZZZ wrote:" won't be consistant. Right now, the (...) The only semi-tricky part would be to identify the 'XXX said' line - though, it's a safe assumption that if the line before a quoted region has exactly one sentance and ends with a ':', it's part of the quote.
