Well, there’s a little more to it, actually. Basically, you need the code to figure out what’s what. Since LUGNET was designed to work with SMTP and NNTP, the exact string “In lugnet.xxx.yyy, ZZZ wrote:” won’t be consistant. Right now, the only way it knows who said what is based on how many greater-than signs preceed the line.

For example, you could have *instead*:

Yes, but 6-wide is Lego’s standard!
6-wide sucks!

Now, the FTX engine would have to know that “On MMM DD, YYYY HH:MM:SS, xxx wrote:” is a valid string as well. But it would also have to recognize “xxx wrote in lugnet.yyy.zzz”. And also “On MMM DD, YYYY, xxx wrote:”. And every other combination possible (which isn’t possible to enumerate since people can define their own in their respective email/nntp applications, AND they can edit the post when they’re writing it!)

Or, you can omit the messages all together (as many people do):

Yes, but 6-wide is Lego’s standard!
6-wide sucks!

And now the FTX engine doesn’t know how to make heads or tails out of it, except by looking at the number of greater-thans preceeding each line.

So, essentially, it can’t really do it, unless we somehow forced the standard onto everyone (retroactively too!). Unfortunately computers are just too darn literal to make it feasible at the moment without being confusing for end users.
