Regarding how October 1st was chosen, Suzanne says in her blog:

”... I need to set a deadline. A shutdown clock will initiate shortly. It’s very real and all-encompassing. Everything will be gone from www.lugnet.com but for a pointer in about twelve weeks (possibly Oct 1, 2005). That’s not to say the data won’t live on elsewhere; I’m sure it will. It’s just that Todd and I can’t be responsible for it any more ...”

Hi Robert: With due respect, did you happen to read what Suz herself wrote here? Here’s the central point, IMO:

No piece of a blog entry should be pulled out, given a title and posted at LUGNET with an implication that an announcement has gone unnoticed by LUGNET users.

What will be, will be, of course. But I suspect that it will be more helpful to allow Suz to circulate her announcements here on LUGNET at her own pace.

Dave!

I am still struggling with the timing. I’m relieved that there has been no rush of panic!

Here’s what I’m thinking at the moment... For my own sanity, it seems reasonable that a rough course of action be decided upon by Aug 1. That is to say, I’ll have listened to a whole bunch of people by then, asked questions, looked at data, etc. and should have a plan (which may or may not be the same one I held in hand when I wrote the blog entry quoted above). A “plan” will just mean that a clock starts counting down, and we all understand some guidelines for what sort of good news might stop the clock.

I apologize for my still not being sure about those two dates, but sixty-ish days seems like a reasonable amount of warning before a shutdown, yes?

(...) Just to remind, this was a blog entry from about a month ago - not an official announcement to the LUGNET community. (...) Boy, that went by fast. But it's August first and I am organized. yea! The "real" announcement is now being written. (19 years ago, 2-Aug-05, to lugnet.admin.general)
