I would feel much less comfortable around Lugnet without knowing people's
names - I guess I am a very visual person and a name gives me a peg to hang
a mental image on of the people whose posts I am reading and to which I am
replying.
I am not saying any of the mental images I create have anything to do with
how a person really looks - some of them are just mini-fig pictures anyway -
but I just like knowing the one true thing I can count on here is that
people's names are real.
I understand privacy concerns, and I have dealt with my share of spammers,
but I think that there is something really special about knowing a person's
real name on the internet. When I read a post from Matt Gerber, I picture a
guy with a wife and kids; when I read a post from Shiri Dori, I picture a
young but very insightful woman; when I read a post from Richard Marchetti,
I picture a college-age guy with a lot of MOC's covering every horizontal
surface in his small apartment, it's a small apartment 'cause he'd rather
spend money on Legos and stuff. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm not.
See what I mean about a peg to hang an image on? The aliases, nicknames,
and other stuff are just icing on the cake, to mix my metaphors.
I'm going to stop rambling on now.
Good night,
Tanya
