If you just want to use them as motors, then B is the appropriate solution. You are correct in the motor PWM routines are just used to control the amount of energy going to the motors. Too much trouble to thread monofilament thru the chain... if I'm gonna use a non-lego element (the filament)... I'll use it as simply as possible (w/o the chain).
