(...) There may be no functional difference, but they're very different things. A domain name certainly _isn't_ any old DNS entry. A DNS entry can be a lot of things -- an MX record, a CNAME, etc. Some DNS entries are for host names. Those get A (...) (27 years ago, 27-Sep-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.general)

(...) Sure. But a FQDN is different from a "domain name". That's what the "Fully-Qualified" part is there for. :) FQDN = host name + domain name. Therefore, by definition, host name is not a part of domain name. (27 years ago, 27-Sep-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.general)
