What wasn't mentioned in the article is that Lego plans to discontinue electric trains, and also that they are mostly sold on the internet. This will no doubt discourage parents from buying the sets for their kids. After all, there can be only so (...) (20 years ago, 14-Jul-06, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

From the very first basic sets of 1949, until 1965.... all Lego Basic Sets were nicely housed in flat boxes with all the elements displayed in checkerboard and zig-zag patterns. (...) Yes, though the things to think about are the voltage drop across the diodes or other devices and the amount of power required.
