(...) The drop bay is one continuous walk-through section. There's not a lot of space (a little over four studs in width), but would be plenty for a minifig dropmaster. (...) I think there's a parallel between building mechs and building cargo ships, because the inside (either the joint tech or the cargo space) dictates what you can do with the outside.
