Dear lugnet.build.mecha,

After reading about the Beesch and particularly some of the response and encouragement I received here I decided that I would give Mech building a try.

Of course, the one particular item that amazed me the most from the Beesch was the use of gears to create gravity-defying articulation!!! I loved the challenge and marvelled at Eric’s abilities. I just had to try it out.

After having a few personal discussions with Mark Neumann, he suggested that I should start small without gears and work my way up to a larger worm-geared creation. I agreed.

Mark also suggested that I keep in mind the fact that Mech building is really only a platform with legs. I agreed and let my creativity work from there.

So without further ado, I would like to unveil my first Mech creation: The PlatforMech ABD-I

I would appreciate as many pointers and suggestions (good and bad) as possible since I am already beginning to build a worm-geared, medium-sized (24 gear) version of this same MOC.

Thank you, Brian

Hi Brian! One thing you'll notice that is different between ball joint and gear driven mechs is the range of motion using gears is very linear. That being the case, balance will now be a larger factor in building than it ever was before. My personal (...) (20 years ago, 21-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.org.us.cedarlug, FTX)

(...) Brian, I thought this creation was a hoot. For several reasons it reminded me why I do this in the first place. You built a mech just because you wanted to and grow with it. Good for you!
