You could write a routine that instead of caputing 1 pixel, captures that pixel, and the other 8 around it at once. There's a related project (ongoing) which right now (or recently was) taking a look at reorganizing names and categories for LDraw parts -- a great place to help with that out would be to check around in the lugnet.cad.dev group.
