Hidee Ho!

Finally, I figured out the basics on my new digital camera, as well as found
some time to play with it.

New additions to my previous Moonbase folder at:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=45403

Deeplinks of the new stuff for pre-moderation:

View of the Magneto Fusion Power Plant with new mods behind:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_01.jpg

Angled view of the same:

Overhead, from the Power Mod:

View of all five Mods:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_08.jpg
The rooftops of the low-income housing mods are rented out to communications
companies to supplement the cost of construction.

The four High Density Living Mods:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_02.jpg
Note that the floors are interchangable (except for the basement levels) such
that I could make an eight level mod, for example, or as pictured here, two mods
of two levels, one of three, and one of one).

Two MTron utility workers check out the shiny new Recycling Collector in the
basement level:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_05.jpg
Two of the mods have one of these.  The two vehicles nearby are recycling rovers
of which the rear fits inside the Collector once opened.

Stockhandling Droids work the loading dock in one of the basements:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_03.jpg
The two mods without Recycling Collectors each have a sliding loading dock door.
Each of the four basements also includes an airlock to an exit portal, and all
four mods have a turbo-lift at the center of each floor.

Example of an interior living area:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Hendo/Moonbase/HiDens/moonbase_04.jpg
Most floors are divided into four apartments.  Although small, each apartment
includes a bed, toilet/sink, stovetop, table/chest and a mini-telecomp.  Some
have double bunks.

The only unfortunate thing (from my POV) is that I have drained my blue bricks
down to almost none.  I don't have any 1X blue bricks remaining, and thus a few
of the floors interiors are not complete.  I may setup a scene of construction
workers and droids working inside such areas.  Or I might spend money on blue
ABS at BF...  :)

Let me know what you think!

Hi,
As I stated earlier, I've played around with Track Designer to see how
things would fit...
I've drawn a few layouts, all based on the idea that train tracks would be
installed on the edges of the modules.
http://www.wegmuller.org/lego/moonbase/basic.gif : this one is very simple
and does not require any special module to work. It features a "behind the
scenes" rail yard (designed for short trains), to keep a variety of trains
ready to go.
http://www.wegmuller.org/lego/moonbase/fig8.gif : this one uses a crossing
with two tracks runing through a base made up of only four modules.
http://www.wegmuller.org/lego/moonbase/mmouse.gif : this one uses two
crossings and has a passing track. This layout requires that three modules
be "train friendly". Those would probably be a station anyway...
http://www.wegmuller.org/lego/moonbase/moontrain.gif : In addition to the
passing track, this layout requires that modules inside curves be aware of
this fact. I think the recently published "commons" module would work for
this...

Greetings,
David Wegmuller

I was thinking more along the lines of required train motor/track friction
than physical part limitations. I've read some of the discussions in .Trains
on the subject, but I know that those Train Guys are intent on pulling as
many cars as possible with one engine. ;-) IIRC the unofficial slope was 1
plate per track section.

The Monorail's hill climbing ability does make it more suitable for
elevation changes, especially large ones to get up and over an
obstruction.

I'm more interested in the Space Community's opinion of train v. monorail
with regard to availability. My hunch is that there are more people with
trains than monorails, but I've been wrong before.

I don't think it has to be an either/or. We can have both.

The planters and open-faced helmets are a departure from the usual “hostile environment” theme, and so this would be hard-pressed to fit well into any moonbase display I’ve ever seen. It would work better if the plants were weird-colored and tended by martians, but as it is it doesn’t seem like a moonbase module.

Hi Tony, thanks for the reply.

Open faced helmuts? Where? The visors are just flipped up. Also, what is the matter, never seen ESB? Forest moon dude.

Sorry... “it doesn’t seem like a moonbase module” wasn’t fair.

...and pardon me if I seemed in kind.

How many do you have, anyway? Do you keep them assembled, or do you take each down to build another? I’d love to see all of ‘em hooked up and populated with mechy goodness. It would be cool to have that many modules that all thematically go together so well.

Let’s see, I have 4 Moonbase Module Mech Bays now, a total of 14 baseplates:

Mech Bay 04 on LUGNET Mech Bay 04 on Brickshelf
Mech Bay 04

Mount SciBrick - Moonbase Module Mech Bay 05 on LUGNET Mount SciBrick - Moonbase Module Mech Bay 05 on Brickshelf
Mount SciBrick - Moonbase Module Mech Bay 05

Mech Bay 07 on Lugnet Mech Bay 07 on Brickshelf
Mech Bay 07

Mech Bay 08 on LUGNET Mech Bay 08 on Brickshelf
Mech Bay 08

I myself can’t wait to get 500 tables and put them together! See, and there is the quandry, you are right, the green” forest/grasslands module makes for a funky fit. However, it was my thought to surround Mech Bay 08 with similar earthen terrain. A future goal in tandem with other Mecha Builders so we can have a layout strategy for the genre.

Thanks again, try to keep an open mind.

Aw, don’t take it like that, man. I’m happy to see a post that actually has a MOC- those are so rare around here these days. Thanks!

Agreed, -10 yards Sophie.

Well 20 high would make more sense as it would not conflict with the
corridors.

True, but if we go by this plan:
http://www.wegmuller.org/lego/moonbase/moonbase.gif

Then even if the mono track is the exact same height as the corridors it
won't conflict.
