hello! i finished my most recent ship, HM Figate Minotaur. she is a light
frigate, with 20 guns on the upper deck, and 4 carronades on the top deck. (much
smaller than the real Minotaur, a 74, but her color inspired me, so i named mine
after the original) she is 4 center sections, normal width. i made a full set of
sails for her, with course, top, gallants, and royals. i also made some
staysails, but i didnt make any for the mizzen, as they were too narrow and
looked funny. so, heres a deep link:

i had to make the masts very high, so i actually used a short mast base and a
middle mast section with a mast platform, and attached a complete mast assembly
of a tall base, middle section, and top section, to get tall fore and main
masts. i had to fabricate some fighting tops, as the mast platforms were in the
wrong spot. actually, after i built the tops and attached everything, the masts
were pretty sturdy........until i added the stays. ironic, huh...
anyway, the goal of this ship was to break up the straight lines that lego lends
itself to forming, as ships are not straight, but rather the hull is curved.

I’ve had the same idea to make tall masts like that, but I never had enough mast
pieces to do it. I guess great minds think alike.

Looks like a great ship.
You need to take some pictures with Mini-figs on it or something though, to make
the pictures more interesting I think.

Nice work again! The colour scheme isn’t one I would have expected to work...
but I wouldn’t have expected the light grey/blue scheme to work either.

They are nice and tall! I wonder if it would be worth moving the top sections 2
studs forward? It would make the masts less stable though...

You’ve succeeded masterfully in breaking up the straight lines! The stern is, of
course, another work of art.
The details on the deck - the twin wheels (if only Lego had have used an axle
hole rather than a technic stud...), the boats, the capstan, the carrronades -
really complete it. And that fore-to-aft curve... magnifique!

actually, i do think some would liven up the pics a bit. in reality, i dont have
almost any right now, as i sold many of them along with some legos recently, but
i will buy more, never fear!

well i was inspired by a picture i have of the real Minotaur in one of my books.
of course, the real one was more of a light burgandy, and less bright red, but
i think the Lego red worked out pretty well! i actually like it better thean the
grey. i would really like to try a green and white color scheme, i think that
would look right nice! maybe even a brown and some other color. i think the
brown would look nice if one could break it up enough with the other color, the
ship would be a continuous brown, but accented nicely.

i didnt think of that! it might work, but id have to rebuild the fighting tops
and rigging altogether, hmmmm....daunting task.
oh, i dont know if you can see to well in the pics, but i built some fairly
substantial fighting tops up there. i never was satisfied that my men had to
stand on those little Lego platforms. now there is room for more sharpshooters!

you do me much to much honor sir, i am flattered, thank you very much.
really though, i am just trying to enjoy myself and advance ship design, and
besides, i take my cues from those that came before me. if you look at my ships,
the first ones were modeled in the style of Richard Parson’s light Frigate
(name?), and then i came to appreciate the design of your own EponineII (using
tall slopes), then i experimented and came up with my own mix of what i thought
worked. so, many people have had a hand in my designs, i cannot claim them as
entirely my own. all i wish to do is give back to the community that inspired
me.
okay, thats enough mushy stuff for now....sorry about that ;-)
anyway, i think i have reached the stern design that i will continue to use,
it’s stable, relatively easy to get to work, and i think looks great (in my
humble opinion) now on my next ships, i will try to figure out how to be clever
and embellish it a little. after all, ships were not very plain, a bit of
decoration would be just the ticket.
finally, the hull curve: i experimented with exact part lengths for hours,
trying to decide if i should overlap them or not, eventually, i got what you see
here. its all about fooling the eye. the lower ship is built just like any of my
others, but with the accenting colors and the top half staggered, the whole
thing looks curvy, instead of straight. i am pleased with the final product, but
as always, look forward to tweaking it in the future :-).

The sheer (curve) to the hull is very nice, and adds an extra touch of realism!
