Hi All!  I'm in a situation where I can obtain several pirate hulls for very
cheap -or- free.  In addition to the hulls and masts, what parts are really
important to the ships?  Please give me your opnions.

I'm not a real big Pirate-head but SAILS, from what I have seen
(unless you are including them in the masts) you need the sails.  I
believe that they would be the second hardest part to get after the
hulls, perhaps even harder to find than the hulls.  My reasoning is
that the mast pieces and the hulls have been available in other themes
(ok the hulls were gray, sue me! :^)   Also some people like having
more yardage (of sails) on their vessel so try and acquire more sails
for their existing vessels.
Hmm, after the sails, masts and  hull bits I'd say the minifigs are
the hardest but like I said I am not a pirate-head just an interested
observer.  (castle, drool :^)
I am sure that some of the really hooked pirate types will wander by
and fill you will more  specific/accurate info soon.

Hope this Helps,

Mike

All other themes are just spare parts for Castle! :^)

Any parts that are free are important.  Free is good.  Cheap is
good too, fut free is far fuperior.  Of course, make sure you
have enough midsections (or the bits to make your own), some
lattice windows (arched or 1x4x3 shutter-frames), cannon, a
few scurvy sea dogs (that guy with the windsurfer on a T-shirt

fired from aforementioned cannon), and mast *bases*.  Oh yes,
you can't do very much without mast bases--the things will just
keep popping off the studs.  Same deal with the trapezoid rig
   pieces.

Hey, BTW, who was the kind soul who lent me these two X-long rig

interest, naturally, name your needs) this year.

   all best

Rob:

I would suggest you take a look at brickshelf.com, and check out the
instructions for all the pirate, etc. ships that are there. Many parts you
might need/want will be shown, as well as how they are incorporated into the
final products as designed by TLG. (Not to say you cant come up with other
parts that would fit your own ideas/MOCs, though, but this will give you a good
start.)

Here's a quick list I'd be looking for...

Masts, sails, and mast bases.

Spars - 1x4,6,8,10 black plates; 1x2,1x4 plates with 90 degree rod extension
(for attaching spar to mast); 1x4 plate with round knob (for attaching sail to
spar); 1x2,1x6,1x8 plates with fingers, for angled fore and aft spars. The
instructions will show you how these can be made.

Helm wheels, cannons, anchors, rigging pieces, black 8L(?) rods like those used
for windsurfer masts are nice to have.

Half arches are good for extending the deck out over the stern.

Arched or square windows, with mesh screen.

I like 1x1 cones stacked for the uprights of railings, and the 4 pronged to 1
prong piece (like that used for palm trees) for lanterns.

Again, best bet is to browse the instructions, and see what parts are used. You
may already have some from other sets that you can "press" into duty aboard
your ships.

(In a pinch, 1x2 inverted slopes can also be used to make a hull mid-section
extension.)

Good luck.

Just my .02 Lupins,
Steve

I've already got about 20 mini-figs, and they are already in my castle's
town, but I think I can aquire more.  It sounds like most of the sails are
destroyed, and that has been bothering me.  I have to think of a way to make
sails!

I have to agree with the free part, I'm already getting baseplates and parts
from others who are not interested in the hobby.  I will make sure to get
all the accessories, and not any Paradisa peoples, unless they are free.

Yes, Free is great! Others not interested in the hobby? how could they! :) i
have a bunch of friends with a bunch of lego, and they dont even use it and
they wont give it to me(or sell it) they are all like "What would you want
it for?" oh well sounds like you have better friends then me if you are
getting free lego! i would definitely go masts, to get back on subject.
Masts and the pieces to connect them are the most important to me. Finding
enough inverse slopped 2x2(preferably in the same color) to extend my ship
hulls is one of the bigger things too. Now if i could just find someone
selling dark grey for less then 25 cents a pop... good luck on your ship
building.

What's this about using bricks to extend the hull?  I'm new to Pirate and
ship building (actually using the boats for castle).  How do you do this, I
haven't even see a boat-hull in recently, and the only time I did, I was
about seven.  How do you make this look natural?    BTW My friends think
that they are too "old" for Lego's! Ha!

Do not worry about the sails too much, you can use muslin cut to the pattern
of the tattered sails. Look for the following.

Tall brown rigging
Black base mast pieces that are approx. 4" tall ( not the 4x4plate w/base
for mast)
Crows nest
Red or green flap pieces ( covers the gunports)
Yellow window frames with lattice work window treatments ( A set of five
complete went for $32, ouch)
Black 4 pronged lantern pieces with round 2x2plate for the top of the
prongs.
The hull sections themselves are hard to find.
Yellow flower like pieces on used on the back of the BSB

These are the pieces I usually look for especially the windows, gotta have
more windows, windows............

I use inverse 2x2 pieces, two stacked on each other, so it kinda looks like
the wood planks. if it is  the right color(which i can rarely get enough of
the same color) and you are not looking too close it goes with it IMO.  you
then take these two pieces and connect them to another two pieces with a 1/3
stud high piece of the right length(depending if you are building these for
the wider ships or the thinner ones) then you put another one third piece on
the top inverted slope so that it is of equal height to the original hulls.
On the botom of the 1/3 high piece that connecter the inverse slope piece on
both sides you put a piece that will fit into the connecting pieces on the
original hulls. I usualy then put another 1/3 high piece on the botom for
stability. Boy this is confusing explaining this. Maybe i will get a picture
up soon of one... I know other people do this, because a couple years ago
when i thought i had brilliantly thought it up i found on a site someone
else doing the same. :) oh well. Anyway it would be alot easier to explain
with pictures, but i never figured how to work the lego cad or L draw
programs... maybe i will get some pictures of MOC up soon.  i just took a 30
shot sequence of a battle... its going to be nifty. Now if i could just
figure how to wash mini figs....
