To All,

Well, we just had a little meeting for the upcoming GATS show in July,
and I think it went really well. We meet each other at Chris Leach's house,
and there were a total of 4 there, Steve , Chris L, Amy Hughes, and myself,
Scott S. We talked about everything from China to tables to ropes to
sleeping patterns, so it was pretty fun.

We have decided to get more tables, mostly due to Steve's train yard, and a
few additions like a bridge and a mountain. We also want to get some rope
type barriers for that weekend. I think we have a good plan for getting
involved for this time, and I think we will be able to get a really good
display going.

Anyone interested in supplying anything, from train track to buildings to
whatever, feel free to e-mail Chris, myself, or Amy. We would like to have a
feel for how many will come. You don't need to bring anything, any help for
setup or takedown is appreciated, and even to visit is great.

I am looking forward to it, and I think it will be a lot of fun! Thanks for
having us, Chris!

As for me, this might be the last time I see you guys before I move down to
Michiana, so it was nice seeing Chris, Amy, and Steve again, and I hope to
see you in the future, I will come to the meetings, and to the Sci-Fi
Convention, and will still participate.

I am certainly glad for MichLUG! TTYL!

Scott S.

Since I dont fancy myself in the 'Train' Department, I am more town and
space, I have some thing I might build for the GATS show but won't be train:
1) a municipal blng. (fire station, police statio, city-hall, etc...)
2) office buildings
3) a wherehouse sitting by the tracks. (I have been expermenting with the
15" x 15" baseplates for a roof.)

4) (sorry, had to throw it in) a spaceport.

Now the office building I can do fairly quickly, but the wherehouse might
take some time. I might put some automation in it as well. If you have
somethign you need, LMK, so i can start to design it.

Rick & All,

Since I dont fancy myself in the 'Train' Department, I am
more town and
space, I have some thing I might build for the GATS show
but won't be train:

Any help is appreciated! : )

1) a municipal blng. (fire station, police statio,
city-hall, etc...)

We could use a government building, we have enough fire
stations. A police station would be nice.

2) office buildings

Definately, or some commerical buildings, like strip malls,
stores, etc.

3) a wherehouse sitting by the tracks. (I have been
expermenting with the
15" x 15" baseplates for a roof.)

A warehouse? That would be very useful.

4) (sorry, had to throw it in) a spaceport.

Well, I have one too, but I don't think it will fit in too
well. Besides, the airport could cover being a spaceport
anyway.

Now the office building I can do fairly quickly, but the
wherehouse might
take some time. I might put some automation in it as
well. If you have
somethign you need, LMK, so i can start to design it.

Thank you sir! We all appreciate it. We are expanding the
tables, so we nee every building we can get, from phone
booths to skyscrapers! : )

Unfortunately I don't think I will have anything to contribute for the
show.

My next project is a minifig scale stealth fighter... so unless anyone
wants to stage a reenactment of the stealth fighter / train attack scene
in "Under Siege 2".....     ;-)

The scale may be too large to fit in properly with the airport also.

How about a pet food factory?  Anybody have a lot of unused horses?  :^D

Have a rectangular building with no windows.  Have the horses funnel up a
ramp on one side.  Have a big door along the side of the building for empty
trucks to enter (make the fact that they are empty noticable).  At the end
of the building opposite to the horse entrance ramp, have another big door
for trucks leaving chalk full of canned goods (1x1 cylinders).  Trucks only
enter empty, only leave full, large numbers of horses enter, no horse is
ever seen leaving the building.

Then put some happy mural along one side, like: "Smile!", and have a simple
sign over the truck doors: "Billy Bob's Pet Foods"

It would be very simple to incorporate into a town layout, and would be easy
since you NEVER show the interior.

Oh where is my wherehouse? :o)

(that's warehouse)

At least you didn't slip up one more letter there. ;-)

<snip>

Everything sounds great.  I WILL NOT be attending the show due to events
scheduled 4 years ago :).  I will send my track up and the road plates that
I have with who ever.  I will have some buildings to put in.  Do you guys
want the water tower again?  I could make it taller, and bigger.

At this show I will not send up everything like I did last time.  Maybe some
boats for the water scene and everything else I mentioned earlier.  I dont
think Scott, Chris or any one else wants to haul all my stuff up.

Some thing I want to talk about is the electrical layout.  We did not have a
very effecient electrical system last time.  I think we should have block
controling again but have all the blocks controlled from a single point.
That will mean bringing even more long wires and extension cords.  And maybe
Mindstorms controlled layout?  So many times around for a train and the
switches bring the train in and let another train out?  DCC even?

Kai,

Everything sounds great.  I WILL NOT be attending the show due to events

Pah, what could be more important than a LEGO train show for GATS? ; )

I will send my track up and the road plates that
I have with who ever.  I will have some buildings to put in.  Do you guys

Anything and everything would be fine, Kai.

At this show I will not send up everything like I did last time.  Maybe • some
boats for the water scene and everything else I mentioned earlier.  I dont
think Scott, Chris or any one else wants to haul all my stuff up.

Well, I think Chris or Steve could arrange to pick up your stuff, I will be
in Indiana by April 14th, so I don't want to drive here, then there if I can
avoid it.

Some thing I want to talk about is the electrical layout.  We did not have • a
very effecient electrical system last time.  I think we should have block
controling again but have all the blocks controlled from a single point.
That will mean bringing even more long wires and extension cords.

Indeed. Any thoughts on this? Chris, Larry, etc? We might need some
controllers on each of the holes, that should take care of a lot of the
problems I think.

And maybe
Mindstorms controlled layout?  So many times around for a train and the
switches bring the train in and let another train out?  DCC even?

Whoa, whoa, hold on Kai! We nee dto see the feasibility of that before we go
and make it into a train show. Is it feasible to have Mindstorms control it?
Did anyone ever do it? Probably one of our future things we want to look at,
not this showe, though.

I think the appropriate thing to do is what has been learned by hard
experience by GMLTC. Use blocks. Make them electrically separated using
either tape between both rails at a joint or by attaching straight track to
a plate with a one stud gap between two adjacent rails.

But then put the controllers NEAR the blocks on the inside of the square,
not all in one place. Putting them all in one place adds confusion (which
controller controls which block) and causes voltage drops, the whole reason
you are using multiple controllers in the first place is to avoid those.

And maybe

Agreed. Too ambitious to control mainline operations and switches cannot
reliably done with current technology... Make a Mindstorms controlled
accessory that is independent of mainline operation if you like, though.
