One of the Shifty sets is a copy of Lego's 1932 Wizard's Cart
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/1736

or so you would think if you saw the box featuring a blue wizard with white
beard pulling a cart.

However, a Shifty set is always a bit of a lucky dip on colours, so it
should have come as no surprise to me to discover that the wizard was mostly
yellow in colour (yucky!), his hat was blue (as it should be) and his long
beard was brown!

According to the peeron database, this beard part only comes in white and
light grey in Lego, so I actually thought it a pleasant surprise to get a
brown beard in the Shifty set (cost $2 or US$1.10). Oh, and you get a silver
wand too.

Argh!!!

When I posted the above, I had only looked in the polybag. Now that I have
built the set I have discovered that the brown beards are not moulded properly
and prevents the head from sitting as low as it should on the neck.

So, while the head goes on enough to hold it on, the head is sitting too high
and you can still see the mouth above the beard, so you can have the full beard
without the moustache look, but not the full moustache-and-beard look.

This Shifty stuff is really a lucky dip on quality. Some things are fine,
others not.

Well, to my mind the HP sets had a similar problem with the bearded guy
whose face was misprinted such that even though the minihead will sit lower
(or correctly), you have to raise it up so that the glasses do not appear to
be located beneath the beard.  Or is it just my mini?

Isn't lego quality becoming fairly "iffy" also?

Anyway, I am going to guess that there is nothing wrong with the Shifty
beard that cannot be solved with a Dremel tool, jeweler's file, or a hobby
knife.

No, mine are like that too, so I think it's a generic fault.

Lego is not always perfect, but Shifty is definitely a lot "iffy"-er based
on my actual experiences with it (all reported in this newsgroup).

This is probably true. I looked pretty carefully at the beard and couldn't
see exactly where the problem was occurring so it is probably a minute error
that can be fixed. The problem is definitely in the beard and not the head,
as I tried the Shifty beard on a Lego head and shoulders and got the same
problem. However, I am the kind of clumsy person who would most likely cut
off my fingers if I started messing about with a sharp knife, so I leave
such experiments to others!
