e,
You know I've been one of your biggest fans, and am a proponent of keeping
things civil and peaceful, but, as some others have stated, this post does go
against the ToU. Specifically--
http://www.lugnet.com/admin/terms/agreement
11. (do not) Post auction announcements, updates, or listings (auction spam)
in discussion groups which do not explicitly welcome their presence. If you are
unsure whether auction spam is appropriate in a given discussion group, check
the groups descriptive charter. If the discussion groups charter does not
explicitly say that auction postings are allowed in the group, then such posts
are not welcome. Currently, the only LUGNET discussion group which allows
auction spam is lugnet.market.auction, which was established specifically for
auctions.
Even if you set the FUT to .auction, the original post was posted to other
newsgroups. The mecha group doesn't explicitly welcome auction posts (that I've
seen).

Auction posts are unwelcome in ALL groups unless the group explicitly welcomes
them, and .build.mecha doesnt explicitly welcome them, so I see no problem with
Daves sentence. And as .build.mecha does not explicitly not welcome them, I
dont see why you think thats what Dave meant.

Well, heres where Im confused. Its really irrelevant whether or not auction
posts are welcomed by participants, since they are explicitly unwelcome, as
spelled out in the TOS.

They are not explicitly unwelcome in any group charters (that Im aware of).
The unwelcomeness in any particular group is implicit (not explicit) from
the overall site TOS, unless explicitly welcomed in the group charter (which
is not the case in .build.mecha).
Clear?

I finally had to go back and read the particular TOS. I had assumed that
auction spam was flat-out forbidden; it appears that a group can in theory
allow such posts (although I have no idea how this would be decided upon).
Thanks,

Check out .org.au
In mentioning this though, I realise the .loc.au charter doesnt explicitly allow such postings, so there are probably
many TOS violations in that group, not to mention the sidebar. Hmmmm. Maybe time
to get the charter changed. If possible.

IIRC the .org hierarchy was partially set up as a place where people could offer
things for sale to their local area. I can remember that years ago a certain
Australian got banned from posting for advertising sales in .loc.au but was then
allowed back when they posted them to .org.au
