And thats my problem with this event...
and with the direction many of the AFOL events have been leaning. Dont get
me wrong, I love kids, and want them to know how cool LEGO is. I worked for
LEGOLAND so I could show them. But I dont pay $70 plus hotel, plus two or
three days off work for that.
I miss when our events were about the community coming together and playing.
And I have to say I take some offense to paying a registration fee to an
event that then uses mine and others creations to draw a public crowd and
charge admission. If the registration fees were going down in cost, I
wouldnt peep. But they seem to be rising with the more public days the event
allows.
We are near a paradigm shift with events. Soon it will be time to hold huge
expos of AFOL creations to the public. Separately from (perhaps smaller, more
regional) insiders conventions. Were not there yet, but it (should be) is
coming...

Registration for BrickWorld is actually $60.
(BrickWorld registration info) A
small difference, I know. I agree with what youve said and have thought the
same thing about other AFOL events that Ive been to in the past. Hopefully
when you see the Westin (if youre coming), youll think that the nice rooms and
huge display area make it at least partly worth letting the public in. This
summers BrickWorld will be the first one. If the public expo part of the event
doesnt work for the best, then we can always change it in subsequent events.
The fact that this coming BrickWorld is the first one also means that we have no
kind of leftover funds from previous events. If attendees wanted us to adjust
their registration fee because they thought that their MOCs drew in more of a
crowd than someone elses, then wed have to track who brought what and try to
judge how much of a draw each MOC had, which would be IMPOSSIBLE. We dont
want you to feel like were using you, and of course, anyone can attend whether
theyre bringing any MOCs or not. Since the area for BrickWorld is part of
the hotel, well have all night (from 4:00 on) for public-free AFOL events and
comradery. If youre one of those people who like to sleep in reeeally late,
then you just might miss the public altogether. ; ) I hope no one is
discouraged from attending because of the public expo times. Were putting a
lot of effort into making BrickWorld a great event thats well worth attending,
but theres one main ingredient to this event that we cant do ourselves, and
thats you. No matter how many free prizes we convince LEGO to donate, no
matter how many vendors come to sell brick, and no matter how many people show
up for the public expo, BrickWorld is nothing without AFOLs and their amazing
creations. None of the event or theme coordinators are making any money from
BrickWorld. All funds that are collected, both registration fees and public
admission, will go toward making BrickWorld a better event. I know that I
personally am going to try and capture every spare minute I can to enjoy the
people of the community coming together and playing. I hope everyone coming to
BrickWorld has plenty of opportunity to do the same.
