The LEGO Group in Billund held a challenge to select a designer to go to BrickFest - Five designers took the challenge, which was simple: Build a moonbase module according to the standards set by the Space Community, and seen at this link on Zemi.net - hi Jon!

Each designer built a unique design that will be judged by a fan poll—this poll to be exact!

The five modules are:

1. The Loony Luna Knight:
Reluctant to let go of the past and their traditional ways, the Loony Luna Knights live a simple life of jousting and hunting Jar Jar meat. They reluctantly use only the most basic of technology to help them survive in the harsh realms of space, air tanks and fem bots are as advanced as they like to get. After reading “The Da Vinci Code” the knights traveled into space fo rthe holy grail in hope of proving Dan Brown wrong...5000 years later they are still looking.

2. Command and Defense

3. Squidman Module (and what is a Squidman? See the video here - PG for language)

4. Space Hungry Hippos (and how does this work? See the video here!)

5. Ice Planet Dome

More photos can be seen at poll page.

Vote for the best module by Sunday, July 30 - the winner will be coming to BrickFest, as well as its designer! .

Good luck to the designers!

Event Coordinator, BrickFest 2006

Many thanks to Jamie Berard of the LEGO Group, Kevin Loch and Dan Boger

I voted for the ice planet module if only because of the coolness factor of
being the only ice planet MOC ever to use the large octagonal dome in
trans-fluro-orange (now if only I could find a way to get ME one of those :)

My jaw dropped when I saw this post. What an awesome surprise! I think I can tell who’s going to be the winner here, but I like them all! LEGO, send everybody!

You would have known about it on the 18th if you read Jamie’s blog...

I just wish I knew which one was his. I’m always willing to throw a vote to a fellow 04 Master Model loser.

Hi Joe,

These are all very cool.

You might want to add names in the poll section. It’s pretty easy to make a mistake if you’re trying to remember numbers.

Tim

I’d like to, but I am not the webmaster, so I can’t edit the poll...and he’s on assignment out of country!!

Sorry.

I imagine the trip is company-funded, hence the contest. Maybe they could have the winning builder bring all the modules.

You’re right - so they can’t bring everyone....as for the modules, I’ll see what I can do :-)

Talk about a hard choice! I voted for #2 because of the sheer awe-inspiring size, but if I had 2 votes, the Hungry Hippos would get a vote, too.

   3. Squidman Module (and what is a Squidman? See the video <http://media.peeron.com/tmp/squid_man_the_movie.mpg

The video is so funny for squidman module. I think it’s the most imaginative module out of all of them, with the head that opens into a lab. That’s cool. It gets my vote.

But I would like to see the hippos too. I think you should send them all!

Though they are all wonderful and all deserve to go to Brickfest, I have to vote for the adorable hippos. I thought they were really cute, but after watching the video and seeing them in action, I’m convinced no Brickfest would be complete without a visit from the Hungry Hippos! WOW! How creative is that!

Keep up the awesome work everyone! The world needs more adults who remember how to have fun!

Wow, all of the entries are great. Very different & distinct styles. As a castle fan, I’d vote for the Loony Luna Knights, but the functional Hungry Hippos are just too cool not to vote for!

After a week of voting, the moon base competition has finally come to an end. On behalf of the LEGO Group, I would like to thank all the designers who took the time and effort to enter. I’d also like to thank the fans for their comments and positive reaction to this endeavor.

On account of the overwhelming response to two of the entries, I am happy to announce that both designers will be joining fans at this year’s BrickFest!

Congratulations are in order to Play Themes Designer Tim Ainley and Creator Designer Jamie Berard. Tim created the Squidman Module along with its Oscar-caliber video presentation. Jamie brought a blast from the past right into the future with his Hungry, Hungry Space Hippos.

Hailing from Manchester, UK, Tim’s been with the LEGO Group for almost a year. His first products are due to be released early 2007 for a new Play Themes line which has yet to be publicly announced. This will be Tim’s first BrickFest.

An Adult LEGO Fan from the Boston area-turned LEGO Designer, Jamie has worked on products for CREATOR, LEGO Direct, Creative Building and LEGO Promotions. His first products are due out in early 2007. Jamie will also be giving a presentation this year at BrickFest called “Stressing the Elements.”

Again, many thanks to all who contributed to the success of this competition. I look forward to meeting many of you at BrickFest.

Play Well!

Jamie Berard

Is there any chance that there will be slides for this presentation available online for those of us that can’t make it to BF? This sounds like an interesting topic!
