Well, after buying a few of the blue tubs for the green pieces I decided to
mess around with a red castle (far from over).  I was mostly down after
seeing the creations by Dave and Eric.  To me they made the castle wall
section obselete.  But did they ... ?

I was sort of bummed after I saw their stuff too. (It's like, if you live in a
cold place, and go visit florida, then going back to the snow is even
worse... :)
After seeing those cool things that used NO castle-wall pieces, I couldn't
bear using any myself...

So here a little result of what this will be (a small fortress that will be
joined to a mountain on one side:

http://web.utk.edu/~pnazarew/castle/redwalls/

Cool! I'll have to borrow some designs, I definitely will need some red
creations soon <hint hint>...

The second point are the castle walls.  I think that when used spaced out
they can be pretty effective to conserve bricks.

Definitely! They look excellent, so long as they're not used on ground level,
AND sparingly on others.

I am not sure how well gray
with gray looks,

You mean grey with red, right?

but red and black looks a little weird at first.  After I
slept on it it didn't look half bad though.

Didn't look at all bad to me ;-)

I'm in for five more weeks of heck,

Good luck! I've just had my week of that... now third term is over, finally...

Let me know what you think ... Gray will always rule castles in European
style building (I think), but red (clay, vulcano, blue (water), white
(marble, ivory), yellow (sand ... ?) can still make some pretty nice castles.

Hmm... I'm not sure grey will always rule. There seems to be a (still small)
trend of moving a bit away from grey - just a little, but it's growing... I
think combos of grey/black with colors is a great way to go to give a building
some personality!

What's wrong with ground level?  ;)

No no ... Grey with grey - to try to make them invisible.  Grey with red
looks like Dan's Bloodstone Lodge:

http://www.visi.com/~blackened/gallery_castle.html

Personally, I was thinking along the lines of the good referee philosophy.
It's only a good referee when you really don't notice him or her.  The walls
can be really good
if you don't notice them.  Hence the grey with grey.  Again - they can  be
used to save on bricks (which tend to be expensive in grey, no?)

For sure.  Those little red and blue lines that Dave n' Eric (Lugnet Sitcom
idea ... ?  Dave n' Eric's World.  j/k) used really add an artistic touch to
their creations.

Well.. not exactly need, but, y'know, um... er, any better word to describe it
is eluding me. I'll "need" it with regard to my storyline, it's not exactly a
neccessity but a it's more than just a serious want.

Nay, that's not what I meant; I was referring to the feeling that castle-walls
at ground level are silly, because the windows are ubiquitous and
inappropriate... you don't want invaders to sneak through the ground windows,
now, do you?

Heh.  Any invader that can squeeze through those windows is likely to find a
way to get to the second story to squeeze through them. :D

If they are not slaughtered by the soldiers in the wall, on the towers, and
above them on the parapets.  :)  Ever wonder why there is a slight overhang up
there?  Why, in order to drop rocks on the enemies below, of course!.  ;)

Those are the name for the holes in a gatehouse floor.  There is another name
for the ones on the parapets, but I can't remember the word...  I think it
starts with "mach"...  Hmm...  time to find some of my castle guidebooks...

(pulls an old, worn 1st edition DMG from the bookshelf in his office)

I quote...

Machicolation: This is a stone projection which moves the battlement out over
the outer face of the wall.  It has spaces in the stone flooring which allow
missiles to be discharged to the space at the wall foot.

(pulls out a copy of "The Palladium Book of Weapons & Castles" from 1982)

I quote again...

Machicolations - stone structures built out over castle walls to enhance
defense.

and while I've got this open...

Arrow Loops - slots in walls from which arrows could be shot.

(these were often cross-shaped to allow traversal from left to right and up and
down, while giving maximum defense to the archer)

Murder Holes - holes in interior passages through which arrows may be shot.

This concludes our Castle Building 101 class for the day.  Tomorrow, we study

Here in sunny Sydney-by-the-sea we dream of snowballs as well, especially after
the summer we have had/are having. Australia does have a ski industry,bee-
leave it or knot.
But anyway, back to castley topics, since everyone has just refused to develop
the top part of the thread after I mentioned an arctic-orange castle, even
after someone rated it up to 75! I have set myself the challenge of an orange
arctic(or maybe antarctic)outpost/castle (I bought some 7171's on clearance),
or maybe in preparation for the next ice-age.

off-tropically yours,

Snow is real pretty when its new. It can be fun for snowball fights and
tobogganing. Other than that, and as a source of moisture for the fields
in the spring, most people find it to be a nuisance. It's *very* ugly
in the late stages of melting (like here, now).

However, aren't there a number of castles in Britain, Scandanavia, etc.
that encounter snow? Could one model a castle with snow on it? Perhaps
it would just look goofy. I recall seeing one or two snowy Lego scenes,
and they looked not bad.
