Everyone -
Not too long ago, Atilla La'ng emailed me some more documents he has written
based on the original LDraw Connection Database (LCD) document:

I've also received another document, used for someone's masters' degree. I'm
waiting to hear back from him whether or not I can post it (I don't see a
problem, but I figure it's courteous to ask).

Hi:
I'm VERY confused, but have you tried LeoCAM?
OK, the last alpha release only had stud-studInlet pairs, but the way it
works and our ACTUAL implementation is quite close to what you describe at
that webpage. Actually, our .lci files are equivalent to the .lcf file, but
in a XML-compatible format and with little differences besides that.
Right now, all the functionality for the connectors is hard coded (with
algorithms that are VERY simmilar to those you describe, but in an OOP way),
but we hope to develop in the future a simple scripting language/description
to make it very easy to add new connectors. Probably LCD will be the way to go.
I hope we'll be able to release a beta version this week, which
incorporates Studs, Stud Inlets, Axles, Cylindrical Holes and Axle Holes.
Those connectors are not only used in the assembly process by snapping parts
together, but also in the "usage" steps, enabling you to actually "play"
with your models!!! (We've incorporated some sort of collision detection, so
you can easily move a CylindricalHole oven an Axle until it hits something
else ON that same axle).
So, please, give it a try!! :-)

Hi
No I have not tried LeoCAM, but this is good news. This means that it is
probably a sensible and good idea if more than one person comes up with it
separately. (Light bulbs anyone?) Sins it seems that you are closer to
getting it to work than I am I suppose I could adopt your format. Could you
post a link to some documentation for me? I chose not to use XML because I
wanted it to look like the existing LDraw format. GLIDE will not be out in a
new version for some time... I wanted to get this whole clicking thing
working first.

We've just released our beta version last friday. you can get a copy, plus
documentation (on-line web pages, PDF and WinWord) at
http://ima.udg.es/~gonzalez/
With respect to more "technical" documentation, Fran /my student) is still
writting it (it's his final undergrad project) and will be finished (MUST be
finished :-) ) in 2~3 weeks. Anyway, the "technical" documentation will be
in spanish until "someone" wants to translate it...
I really hope you'll enjoy using LeoCAM!

PS: I've downloaded and isntalled Glide but... Have you implemented anything
about this "click" idea? Anyway, I liked the application a lot, specially
the VRML export part :-) :-)

No clicking/snapping is "yet" to be implemented in GLIDE. Hopefully it will
be by the time of the next beta release. Possibly using your file format :)

Hi Damien,
sorry for not being here for a long while. The fact is that, at the time when I
invented LCD and LMPL, I were using a slow dialup account with large phone
bills. I was unable to visit Lugnet often and I could answer private mail only.
Meanwhile, my address lad@rentahost.net became overwhelmed by spam and the mail
you have sent has been probably fallen as a victim of the spam filter. Two weeks
ago, I lost my account at rentahost.net, so there is no spam problem any more.
:)
Now I'm using several mail accounts at @freemail.hu, including lattilad,
langattila and langattiladavid, but I'm also behind the addresses lattilad0306
at hotpop.com and lattilad at axelero.com. I hope such an amount of addresses
will be enough... :)
Currently, I have no home page at all, but efforts have been made to purchase an
own domain with a hosting service. I'm in a great hope that in some days or
weeks I will be able to upload my page to the net again.
Now I'm using a cable modem connection, so finally I can use Lugnet normally and
answer messages appearing here, too. (However, I've subscribed
lugnet.cad.dev.lcd as a mailing list to keep an eye on what's going on.)
Stopping babbling about my situation, LMPL is ready as a version 1.00, finished
almost two years ago. It was published on my previous home page in the last one
year, but losing the page it disappeared from the net now. It will be up again
when I'll upload the page. But of course, I can send it to you if you wish. It
is a 38 kilobytes zip file.
By the way, only a single LCD guy had remained. KACS had disappeared from the
net while I was developing LMPL, and no answer from him since. His website seems
living, but he didn't answer mails, a snail mail, phones...
But I'm here, popping up.
