LEGOLAND California's Ambassador Pass Master Model Builder classes start today
for the 2010 season.  While I'm not a passholder, I have seen examples of past
work, and I have to say that I think Gary has "outdone the brand" this year.
This year's models are truly the best they've produced.

This year, I had the honor and privilege of creating the building instructions
(BI) for the Ambassador models.

----

I've been creating "like official" BI for a few years now.  It started with a
Hummingbird model for the pick-a-brick shop:

http://www.brickoracle.com/pdf/LLC.JK.001-Hummingbird-Release.pdf

and then a Christmas ornament a few months later:

http://www.brickoracle.com/pdf/LLC.JK.002-Reindeer_Ornament.pdf

And now I've done the BI for the two models for this year's class.  I used ALE
tools:

LeoCAD to model the steps
LDView to generate output

Plus Adobe InDesign for layout, and makefiles and shell scripts for many of the
mechanics.

----

I'm using two unofficial augmentations to the LDRAW syntax: an OBI (Original
Building Instructions) syntax that enables the "shading" on the sides of studs
and sometimes other surfaces, and the TEXMAP syntax to support texture mapping
(on the mini-figure head and torso).  These are present in beta-form in LDView
(in the case of OBI commands, throughout my personal LDRAW library).

Here's a sample page from the Ambassador class BI:
http://www.brickoracle.com/pdf/sandcastle1-sample.pdf

And here's a screenshot of the BOM (Bill of Materials) for the last step of the
model:

http://www.brickoracle.com/images/BI1.png

Nice coincidence that "tan cheese slopes" (or, if you prefer, brick-yellow 1x1
roof tiles) are coming out in a COUPLE sets this year... ;-)

I actually have a 4th set of BI I'm working on, but they're not quite finished
yet.  2 years of work (with an ex-LEGO Group employee), around 200 pages, LSYNTH
was required.  It'll be good.  Look for an announcement in the next couple
months.

----

I think that these samples really show the power and capability that ALE-built
LEGO CAD and BI tools have.  I do believe we have "arrived," ladies and
gentlemen.

Hi Joshua,

What does ALE stand for?  No offense, but in the world of BI's, I thought we'd
been here for quite a while?!?!?

Well it's possible Joshua was actually referring to amber fluid, however I think
he probably meant "Adult LEGO Enthusiast".

Or maybe both.

ALE = Adult LEGO Enthusiast (as pointed out)

By "arrived," I meant BI so close to official that it's hard to tell apart from
the "real thing," and so good that TLG (or, at least, a part of it) allowed me
to use LEGO enthusiast-created tools and part meshes* to create something
they're putting their name and copyright on.

The final part of the puzzle here (furthering the "arrival" theme) (to me) are
the "shaded" knobs and texture mapping capabilities that made this model
possible, and made it look so official.

In retrospect, I can see that if you weren't clear on what I meant by "ALE," you
might think I was denigrating the efforts here.  FAR from it!  I am trying to
applaud our third-party efforts and recognize this monumental achievement, which
I don't claim as mine, but rather ours, collectively.

[I did have to break some rules of BI construction to get the BI to fit into
page requirements, and the "fading" invention I had to come up with for this set
of BI isn't exactly de rigeur TLG form, either.  My first draft of this document
followed all the "rules of BI" as I've learned them, but then I had to
systematically break them to "crush" the result down into the required page
count.  In the end, the result is pretty effective, considering...]

    -- joshua

* truth-be-told, I had a little help on some meshes here that haven't actually
been modeled in LDRAW format yet; and -- technically -- these days we aren't
entirely allowed to claim autonomy anyway as many of the trickier parts were
originally sourced from TLG meshes.

Normally, one would have to be a LEGOLAND Ambassador Pass passholder, and sign
up for the master builder session.  I have asked whether the BI can be shared
with Adult LEGO Enthusiasts, and I'm waiting to hear back.

You should be warned, though, one of the perks of having an Ambassador model is
having special parts included.  This is, for example, the first released set
with tan cheese slopes.  If you look closer, there are even more special parts
involved.  So even with full BI, you can't build this model in its entirety (in
tan) without being a passholder.

If granted, that would be nice.

I’ve got no worries over this one, there are copious (and I really mean copious) amounts of tan cheese slopes in the soon to be released set #10214 - Tower Bridge

If you look closer, there are even more special parts involved.

Tan Flag 2 x 2 Square. You’ve got me there, for the time being. It will be an (even more realistic :-) brown in my sandcastle, then. All other tan parts seem to be available, did I overlook any?

With friendly greetings M. Moolhuysen.

I went “through channels” and the answer is that, being an advantage of membership in the Ambassador program, I am not to share it with non-passholders, or -- indeed -- anyone at all since it’s part of their program and now out of my hands.

I’m sorry to have to report that bit of news.

The small flag is a difficult find, yes. But it’s not the only one, unfortunately (and -- yes -- I’m being purposefully vague here). It actually gets much more difficult.

Hi,

Mr. Google came up with this photostream:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/model_gal/sets/72157624773165361/

showing the model in different stages and form different sides. You might be
able to re-engineer it from that.

This should do it. Enjoy!
