| Hi gang,
LPub4.0.0.1 is now available here:
http://www.kclague.net/LPub4.htm
There are many bug fixes (especially LPub metacommands being put in the wrong
place). My thanks to those whom fed me bug reports. Geoff, please try this new
version. I'm pretty sure I've fixed the issue you sent me.
There are a few new features too. When you change pages, the edit window
automatically displays the LDraw file lines for that page. If you click on a
step assembly image, the editwindow automatically displays that step's LDraw
file lines.
LDraw file suffix is ignored. File content tells LPub where it is an MPD file
or a non-MPD file.
I've also changed some of the popup menu titles to make them simpler for
younger ages.
The names used in the assembly image used to be based on a stack of
filename/linenumber (model_12_submodel_45_blah,blah....). This meant that *any*
addition or deletion of *any* meta cause everything to be rerendered (because
the line numbers changed).
I changed these names to modelname/stepnumber format instead (plus the
orientation matrix, model scale, page size, and resolution). Since LPub does
not add or remove steps, just metacommands within a step, LPub does much less
re-rendering, and is therefore faster.
LPub's not too smart with respect to what you manually edit in the edit
window, so things like moving parts across a step boundary, or adding/deleting
steps, or changing ROTSTEP values, go un-noticed by LPub. To compensate, I've
changed the response to the editwindow's redraw button (blue circular arrow) so
that it clears the CSI and PLI caches before redrawing the page (that little
diddie is for ROSCO!)
I hope you enjoy it!
Now I'm starting to work on pages that do not contain assembly steps. Cover
pages (any pages before the first page that shows a step, or any pages after the
last page that shows a step), automatically won't have page numbers.
Non-cover pages can be inserted between any two pages with steps (these will
automatically have step numbers).
In pages with steps, you will be able to insert pictures, text blocks, and
arrows into the steps in the page (any of the above can be placed relative to
page, csi, pli, step number, step group..... blah blah). For non-cover non-step
pages, you will be able to insert pictures, text blocks, arrows, and Bill Of
Materials).
This stuff could take a while, but they're appropriately high priority.

Yes, Kevin it did fix my problem. Thanks much for the fix and the awesome
program.

Bufferexchange seems not to be working anymore in this version.

OK, while testing and playing around with LPub 4 I tried some new techniques
I've come up with. I've recreated the "exact" instructions for set 4491.
http://media.peeron.com/pics/inv/setpics/4491-1.1125850075.thumb.jpg
Rendering the same file in LPub 4.0.0.0 and 4.0.0.1 gives different outputs.
I've uploaded the PDF files and MPD to my Brickshelf folder:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/sjaacko/Temp/4491-4.0.0.0.pdf
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/sjaacko/Temp/4491-4.0.0.1.pdf
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/sjaacko/Temp/4491.mpd
Page 2 step 2: Darkgrey flag (part 2335) is not shown in the version 4.0.0.1
Page 5 step 6: Darkgrey Brick round 1x1 is not shown
Page 6 step 7: Lightgrey Technic pin half
Page 7 step 8: Correct (though I expected the lever not to be shown?)
Page 15 step 16: Correct
Rest is correct.
But now: how to display pages 2, 5 and 6 correct?
I know it is possible, hence page 7 and 15 are correct.
I cannot find what is wrong in my MPD.
Any ideas?

Jaco,
Thanks for your detailed analysis complete with MPD to allow recreation.
I will take if rom here and fix the LPub bugs.

I am looking forward to the results, as I am due to deliver building
instructions for a project I am working on. I have sent you some personal
E-mails about this too.
Once again, I thank _you_ for all you effords in creating LPub.

You missed a difference on Page 2. In the bottom part, the green arrows are
shown in the 4.0.0.1 version, and not in the other version.

And round light grey plate 1x1 is not shown either.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I found one more thing. It appears that at least one of the parts placed in
step 7 gets left around inside the model, and is just visible in step 15 as a
black rectangle in the center of the bottom. The is visible in both versions of
the PDF.

It is indeed. I need to place another bufferexchange there.

Hi Kevin,
I really enjoy the new LPub but sorely miss the page image output. Am I just not
spotting it or has it really been removed? I've always liked the ability to edit
my files in GIMP to add renders, credit etc. Any chance of putting it back
(assuming it's not just me being obtuse)?

I think the page image output is replaced by the ability to create PDF files.
But I'd like to see this feature too!
In other words: 2 options for output: PDF and PNG (whole page) files for every
page.

I think that would be useful, too. Based on past correspondence with Kevin, I
think it is planned but just hasn't happened yet.
What I do is just open the PDF in Preview and save the pages as PNGs. That's how
I made the instruction images I've uploaded to Flickr.

On Windows (sorry, Jim...) you may use PDFCreator
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/). It is used as a virtual printer
that can output PDFs but also various image format. So you can "print" your
instructions with it and create images of any size.

It is on the list. I just finished work in one of my other hobbies (community
theater). "Lend Me a Tenor" just opened last night.
I'm working on resizing of CSI using the mouse (model scale), as well as part
images (part image scale). I'm also working on reshaping the PLI with the
mouse.
After this I will work on individual pages as pictures.

This might interest you:
Creating a PDF in version 4.0.0.1 and printing it gives strange black faces
around some assembly images. See here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/sjaacko/Temp/LPubTests/scanpdf-lpub4.0.01.jpg
Creating the PDF of the same MPD
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/sjaacko/Temp/LPubTests/hummer.mpd prints fine.
