No, this one has an improved flux capacitor that works at much lower speeds.

Of course!
I do plan to add more cars, but I'll need some more grey running gear first.
I only have 2 more wheelsets, and that means I can currently only do one
more car at a max length of 16 studs.

I find all of the "busier" themes (in both parts selection and color scheme)
to be a lot harder to capture. I look forward to seeing that.

Tony,
That has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. You captured the
spirit of CS so very well. Nice launcher/flat bed. Excellent engine... boy
ain't that blue, grey, and trans yellow so nice together. I laughed outloud
at the boxcar/classic space base car. that's SO funny, and SO captures the

As a wee one, I always made fun of the wide-open bases... not that I didn't
love the sets anyway. And yeah, when I was putting this car together I
started giggling like a schoolgirl the moment I put in the chair. And I
wasn't much better when I was shooting the pics.

Yes!!
I just poked around last week's postings and saw your pre-classic figs.
That's pretty cool, and I explored your site a little more. I remember the
big pre-classic ship, but I clearly missed those other (littler) ones until
now- wow!!!

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | That is very cool. Like Allister said, even though I wasn't around to get

But anyway, I really like the way you 'space-a-fied' that train engine. The
high speed train set was one I always liked a lot, and you've captured the
essence of it yet mixed it with classic space.
I like the airlocks and the rotating sensor thing.
And the launching probe ship and opened classic space base-on-a-train is
really great, too. A good mix between humor and technique.
Very nice... glad to see you've risen out of the dead!

Exploriens was the last of the really cool space themes, and I loved it from
the moment I spotted it because it looks just like round 2 of classic space.

That engine was crying out for that treatment. I think I might have built
one (very vaguely) like it in 1979 or so (to run on blue 4.5v track, and the
color scheme must have been atrocious) but my big brothers made fun of me
for it because it didn't look anything like a train!

Thanks! It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that was a staple set
type for many years. It makes even less sense on a train, but hey- that's
the point!
> Very nice... glad to see you've risen out of the dead!
Heh- yes, I come and go but have been fairly out of touch for a while. I'll
probably slip back into the bushes soon, but I'll be back again.

This is a great train! I love the simplicity and small details of the cars,
like the launcher and consloe and the airlock doors on the engine.

Thank you. Simplicity is the watchword with classic space. This type of
creation doesn't require any fancy building technique, nor even a large
range of parts. It's mainly bricks, plates, and slopes. Mmmm.

You have a good memory- I don't remember saying that, but it does sound like

I've been thinking, in reality, this would not be a bad idea at all. Suppose
one day we Earthlings would set aside our silly endless disagreements, work
together and start space explaration. Why on Earth...eh ...Moon would we
allow cars to ruin the beatifull Moon surface with tracks randomly fanning
out from moonbases in all directions. Remind that when you leave a trail on
the moon, it's bound to stay there forever! *) Therefore, I would vote for
public transport for all base to base surface transfers on the moon.
In my view, the sharp edged blocky appearence of the train would be totally
practical also. Why bother to streamline, when there is no atmosphere to
drag you down! The concession made with the somewhat crudely shaped, sloped
nose, clearly has been made on estethical grounds only, manly to give the
tourists visiting from Earth a minimal feel of the Sci-Fi modernism that
they expect to find here.
*) Funny side story in this context:
In 1971 astronaut Alan Shepard on the Apollo 14 mission made an attempt to
break the record for longest golf drive by hitting a golfball on the surface
of the Moon. Despite the ball flying very far helped by low gravity and
absence of drag, his attempt has been disqualified by both USGA and Royal
and Ancient, because of severe violation of golf etiquette: Shepard failed
to rake the bunker before leaving the course.
With this I conclude my small essay.
Friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.

What we really need is robots to comb the surface and rake "random" patterns
into the surface to help make it look nice.
But I do think some sort of rail-based transport would be the way to get
around up there once enough infrastructure is in place.

I had originally intended to do a tapered nose at each end and have a simple
boxy car between (like in the train set I was thematically copying), but I
ended up going fully over into classic space to do cars styled for that.
Who knows- this might go onto the moonbase layout at the next NWBrickCon.
That would mean laying rails all over in addition to the monorails, though.
I'm not sure how practical that will be.

Heh- it sounds to me like Alan Shepard got cheated! On the other hand, it
wouldn't be a "world record" anyway.

Could you convert it to run on monorails?

Monorails have some other limitations that would prevent this model from
making the transition well. But then, I certainly could make a classic
space monorail. Due the the fact that monorail running gear only comes in
black, I'd have to go with later classic space. And then I'd end up with
something that looks an awful lot like my existing monorails. But I should
at least add a rocket launcher. Yeah...

O I dunno. I just built up 6950 (speaking of rocket launchers) and that has
no small amount of black in it, particularly around the running gear. That
set was definitely early CS. Those big inverse trans yellow slopes would
look pretty darn cool on a monorail too.

And it's so easy it's like "Duh" I anticipate the creation of more trains
like this. Blacktron train, M-Tron train etc..
On another note, I now keep imagining a train that slowly goes back in time
along it's length-- front is Space, very back is Castle.

It's been done... http://guide.lugnet.com/set/4559 :-)
(search the archives of .trains and you will find there are other ones as
well!... some very cool ones too!)

http://guide.lugnet.com/set/7745
(not as good of a fit, it's only got 2 of the three signature colors and not
nearly as spacey looking either, but hey, work with me!)

That would rock. Or the other way around, it could be pulled by an "Iron
Dragon" (1) complete with firebreathing head and large wings.
1 - c.f. the Mayfair Games railway building game of the same name which is
an Empire Builder variant... this URL has a good image of such a locomotive:

I took the liberty of adding .castle to the grouplist

"Quite mad", eh? I saw your equation on the sidebar. The third picture is
a little hard to discern, being so small, but it sure looks like something
kind of nutty. Perhaps Michael Jackson would have been easier to recognize.
And he is, after all, the universal symbol of "whacked".

I find your idea intriguing, sir. But I think the back needs to be
dinosaurs instead.

That's Gomez Addams crashing his trains together.
