| | | | | Hi,
I've posted some photos on Brickshelf of my Lego-version of the boardgame
Cathedral:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=25681
It's a cool little game that I've owned for a few years, and I finally got
around to recreating it in Lego. For those of you unfamiliar with Cathedral,
it's a pentominoes-like game where 2 players attempt to fit all their buildings
within the walls of the city (10 x 10 board), while capturing space from their
opponent. I'm not describing it very well, but there's more information plus
the full rules on the company's website:
http://www.cathedral-game.co.nz/frame.htm
(No, I don't work for them :) )
Anyways, hope you enjoy it.
Take care,
Gary

Beautiful execution. I especially like the gray cathedral piece. It's kind
of an abstract city.
Oh, when I was looking at that, the first things I thought of were the
houses and hotels from monopoly. A big monopoly board would be a pretty
cool MOC. Could do the board like a mosaic on the 48x48 baseplate, then do
houses and hotels like you've done your game pieces, then little microfig
models for the playing pieces. Hmm, maybe I'll make something like that.

First, those pieces you have created are quite nice. The board is also
quite attractive. Second, I have to say that that game seems like it would
be quite fun. I looked around the websites it suggests to buy a copy, it is
sort of expensive isn't it? So I guess I will have to copy you and make my
own Lego version of this game. Seems like it will be fun!

Unfortunately, it does appear to be expensive, as the only version available
seems to be made out of hardwood. The version that I have owned for a long
time is made out of normal plastic, and couldn't have cost me more than $20
when I got it years ago.
If they really want people to play the game, why don't they make a version
that is inexpensive, as well?
Also, that's a good rendetition of the game in Lego. The building all look
very nice.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone, I appreciate them.
I haven't looked in a while, but I think the price of the small wooden set was
around $30 US, you used to be able to find them at the Game Keeper stores out
here in California. The quality was okay, nothing special really. But it was
such a clever game idea that had to get it.
I prefer the lego version to be honest, it has a cleaner look than the wood
version and the pieces fit rather nicely. My dream has been to create a
minifig sized version, maybe someday... but I guess that's what LDraw is for.
Anyways, thanks again.
Take care,
Gary

You did an awesome job on these!
I'd buy a set of these if you made up instructions and parts.. how hard are
the parts to come by? There are currently custom kit sellers selling Chess
pieces and boards but no other games that I know of yet...
Do I read right that the basic instructions are OK to copy off the web? It's
a little vague on the site...

Thanks Larry, I appreciate it.
Yeah it'd be a really cool set to sell a kit of, especially since the parts are
relatively easy to come by - basically just bricks, tiles, and slopes. It
seems a little sketchy though since the game's copyrighted, unlike games like
chess and so forth. I think the rules are up more up on the web as a
convenience, so I'd guess we aren't allowed to reproduce them. Interesting
idea though.

1) The wooden pieces may be more expensive to produce than molded plastic
ones. But having seen this game up close, the wooden pieces make all the
difference.
2) Apparently it's quite possible to make your own game......... for free.
Using nothing more than the LEGO bricks you already own. :)
I like reason #2 the best.

I think it's a fantastic use of LEGO bricks. Not just another vehicle, or
building but something really out of the ordinary. Not that there's
anything wrong with vehicles or buildings, but this is certainly a nice change.
Gary... any thought about doing other games in LEGO? Or is this a one off?
Either way, great work!
All the best,
Allan B.

Well, here it is:

I copied yours without many changes, so it didn't require much creativity,
but at least now I can play it.

Oh dude, that's rad. Wow, that's almost exact, pretty cool. I used steeper
slopes, but that's about it.. Very cool. I like the technic brick cross
detail you added. Base looks nice in dark grey too. Good job.
I'll post a dat file of mine in a few days if anyone's interested.

That's very cool. An excellent rendition of the game, and a cool game to
boot. :)
