Kabaya Ghost Stories in LEGO!
Late last year I went to a Japanese grocery store in my neighborhood and
purchased a few of the Kabaya candy Lego sets (the dinosaur and Star Wars
series). There I noticed another Kabaya series of candy toys about Japanese
ghost that were created by an artist named Takaki Yamamoto. Each box contained
a small random vignette-type scene, a short story about the scene and a piece
of chewing gum. Intrigued by the idea of making Lego versions, I purchased one
of each from the set and got busy creating them.
There are five stories in all. Read the read-me files for a translation of each
story and more information.

The Five Stories:
The Haunted Tunnel Under
the Graveyard The
Oirans Ghost The
Marathon Running Ghost Chased By the Ghost Nurse
The Woman Who Ran On All
Fours
I hope you enjoy them!

Wow. This is a real treat right before I go to bed. LEGO at its best.
Blogged.

| Hey Pat,
Wow! Vignette prowess really runs deep in the Yrizarry family gene pool! There
is so much coolness about this series of vignettes:
The mere fact that these LEGO vignettes are based on ??? (porcelain?) vignettes.
The way you matched the figs to the inspirations (e.g. the use of the HP troll
head for the nurse, etc.)
In Marathon Ghost, the foot on the other side of the wall, and the really tall
fig in the bed. :)
In Nurse Ghost, the very clever toilet paper dispenser, and the way you did the
toilet (presumably--Im not entirely sure what that is in the original
inspiration. Do urinals have that design in Japan?)
In Oirans Ghost, the water splashing up, and the red flag.
In Scampering Ghost, the very cool moped design.
In Tunnel Ghost, the way you used hinges to shape the wall. How did you attach
the Bionicle masks, BTW?
On another note, where do you live? I ask because Id really love a chance to
get the LEGO Kabaya promotional sets, and never considered looking in some of
the Japanese groceries around here (I live in Los Angeles).
Anyway, awesome MOCs. You and Nelson are really pushing the bar higher.
Blogged!

Thanks, Bruce!
To amswer some of your questions:
1. The original toys are made of both soft and hard plastics. With the exception
of the tunnel vignette which came in one piece, they all had to be assembled a
bit, but not too much.
2. In the bathroom vig, its not a urinal but a toilet! Some toilets in Japan
are like that. Try doing a Google Image search for the words Japanese toilet
and you will find many examples of real ones.
3. In the tunnel vig, the Bionicle masks have a 1 x 1 cone behind them with the
small end pushed inside of the hinged area of the hinge bricks. Surprisingly,
its very sturdy and Ive had it on my shelf (and picked it up to dust many
times) for about 4 months now without them falling out yet! But honestly, I was
just happy to actually find a use for those masks!!!
Thanks for the replies and the blogging everyone.

I don't care if i'm the third person in a row to say this...but, WoW!!!
Really good stuff man.
You accuracy from those candy toy to Lego bricks is precise and excellent.
Well done, good capture of mood... you managed to grasp the eerie and creepy
feel that the Japanese do so well in the Ring, and the Grudge.
Gee, that's great stuff!

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading the stories and looking at the
mocs. I dont think I would have every described a lego creation as creepy
before. Well done. All of them are nicely built with nifty techniques. In
particular, I like the hinges used in the tunnel. And poor O, he looks
stretched by the experience.
