What can our club do to make things fun again? I’m sick of asking and asking for people to actually show up and get stuff done. And the few of us that actually try to get things built are sick of being the only people doing the work, especially since our club is known for its talented builders.

Smaller shows, more “fun” shows- don’t go to a show that doesn’t at least offer free donuts.

Don’t sweat the detail level- make a fun running toy train layout, and let the smiles on kids faces bring you back into it.

I realistically would NOT expect that every layout can be completely detailed all of the time, or that every train be completely wonderful and scale- if that is how you feel, go play in Proto:87 or suchlike (I have P4 to do that with...and there is a vast difference between the two for standards)

Perhaps have some non train creations “arrive” for a meeting- that, or have a fun meeting where NO trains are to be brought. I know VLC has “assigned” unlikely building things to people (like challenging a trainhead to build a mecha, or a mecha builder to build a car...silly little things like that). Encourage “studies”, a simple demonstration building/part building that is unusual.

I’d not advocate kicking any member out, unless they are actively negative for a substantial period of time- “we can’t do that, I don’t want to do this, lets go home...” We are all going to have bad days when it just doesn’t seem to be worth doing what we are- again, I would suggest looking at the faces of kids at a Thomas event for a wake up & smile.

Question to all the other train clubs

Our train club is stagnating. Hardly anyone shows up to our building sessions, and productivity has dropped to almost nothing. We've lost direction, we've lost enthusiasm, we've lost committment. Help?! What can our club do to make things fun again? (...) (21 years ago, 14-Aug-03, to lugnet.trains.org, FTX)
