If I understand correctly you can add a series resister to each reed switch
using the formula r=2^n*R. Where n is the number of each switch (1,2,3...)
and R is some resistence value that is friendly to the RCX. This way you can
add several sensors to one input and read it like a temperature (anaolog
value) sensor. This way the RCX can control many reed sensors.  FYI I
believe that the newer LEGO touch senors are adderessed in this way.

Any more info on this would be great, I'm at the very edge of my RCX/sensor
knowlegde here.

"No Contact" Homebrew Train Sensor for Mindstorms

As has already been reported by others, I built an automated railroad crossing for the NELUG train display at last weekend's Greenberg show. I wanted to take a moment to describe the "homebrew" sensor that I used to detect an approaching train so (...) (24 years ago, 5-Dec-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.robotics)
