At each end there is a peace of rail that curves. I was going to attempt to
have that go under the layout where I would keep all the trains.

Thanks

I wouldn't give up on going under the layout but you will need to start your
down slope a lot sooner.

I am planning a second level for my ~11' x 11' layout and built a test
sloped section to see if the equipment could handle it.  Keep in mind all
but one of my locos have two motors and I use a MRC throttle which produces
a bit more juice than the standard Lego variety.  The test section has a
maximum slope of 2 plates (2/3 brick) per section with a maximum change of
slope of 1 plate per section (see Matt's rules for slopes).  All the 2 motor
equipment handled the slope fine at 3/4 power with 6-12 cars behind.  I was
also able to stop the train part way up the sloped section and restart again
without difficulty.  The 1 motor loco (a steamer) didn't do so well but did
fine with a 2 motor loco out front (common practice for "helper" districts).
As a result of this test I am going ahead with construction of an oval helix
which will have 26 sections per level (10 straight, 16 curved).  At a slope
of 2 plates per section the elevation gain per level is a little over 17
bricks.  The height of my tallest loco/car is 13 bricks including the track.
The track will be supported by 3/8 plywood with a thin layer of foam board
for noise dampening (about 3 bricks total).  Therefore I will have a little
over 1 brick of clearance.

All that to say you would need to start your down slope to the South
entrance clear around the corner (anti-clockwise) from the current turnout
location about where you have the other under the layout entrance.  This is
because not only do you need to get under the track and support (plywood
etc) but also your table frame.  If 1"x4"s are used this adds 9 bricks to
the elevation loss needed to make a total of 26 bricks (~40 track sections
at a slope of 2/3 brick/section).  I agree with James, a challenge with this
layout.  Of course, you would also need a reverse loop with only one under
the table entrance.  Good luck!

Hi all, I have a room in my basement that is 9 x 14. There is a door in the bottom left. The only entrance! I would like to have a walkway into the room and be able to reach the whole layout from above. This is Version 1. (URL) help whould be (...) (24 years ago, 7-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)
