Yep, I am replying to myself. I should have said this to start with, but
I guess I was being cagey because I decided to go eight wide.

First, going 8-wide was a very hard decision to make, and I nearly
canned the attempt before it really got off the ground. To build the
8-wide SD40-2 I had to trash my 6-wide SD40-2, and that was hard to do.
In the end I figured that if I didn't like 8-wide I could always rebuild
the original 6-wide SD40-2. Three things kept me going: I wanted to see
if the 8-5 stud arrangement would work, I wanted to see what bigger
exhaust fans would look like (my first idea didn't work, but the three
inverted blue RADAR dishes are pretty good), and I liked the ladder
design which only works on an eight wide model. Most of the model is
just my older one scaled up a bit, but one change is the way the grille
tiles are placed inside the radiator bubble. The new arrangement is not
nearly as fragile as the last one. The other change, and the more
important one, is the railing. The old railing was OK. I felt that there
should be a railing, but I knew that the technic axle wasn't quite
right. I think that this railing is right on the mark.

After making the engine, I decided to rip apart my 6-wide caboose. One
of the big reasons for going 8-wide is to do interiors, and a great
place to due interiors is a caboose. So, I built the caboose relatively
quickly and then had a blast doing the interior. In some spots I used
1x2x2 red thin walls (the thin-walls were added when I started doing the
interior) so I could use all of the available space. Putting bunks next
to thin-walls means that the minifigs can lie on the bunks. I did the
same thing with the chairs. Since the chairs are next to thin-walls
there is enough room for a minifig to sit down.

When I build something else, I'll let you know!

Thanks,
Chris

I really hope you like them, and if anyone can help me find 2 to 10 1 x
2.5 blue tile-with-two-upward-facing-hinge bricks (need 2 but would like
10 to replace the ones that were borrowed from other sets) and 9 black
hinge-with-1x1-round-plate-at-end brick I would be very happy. If you
could also tell me what those pieces are called that would be good.

Thanks,
Chris

1. I think that I would like to do a show, but I wonder if I will. I
could put together a small freight train but I do not think I could do a
layout. I am working on a set of buildings but one set of buildings does
not make a layout,
