Yes, the back of the engine is eight studs wide. I ran 2x8 and 2x? plates along
the sides so I could attach the rail. There may be a way to attach the rail
without going 8 wide, but I haven't had any clearance problems (train station 2150
and the  Freight Loading Station 4555 had to be pushed back one stud) so I haven't
had the desire to reengineer the back down to a 6 stud platform (the train would
then be seven wide if you include the 2 extra half studs for the axels)

The fence was nspired by the people catchers on the street cars down here...but
they do not really look like that. I should put up a picture of one of the real
street cars.

Thanks for the nice comments.

One again I have not tried to make a specific model of diesel electric;
I just tried to make something that looks like a diesel electric. I have
used some ideas from other models, but I have added a 7 stud wide cab,
and a technic axel railing.

Going WIDE.  Is the diesel electric wider than 7 studs across for the length of
the technic axel railing?  Nice job.

Off-topic, I like the way the fence piece is used at an angle on the under side
of the trolley.  Neat effect.
