Welcome to Lego Trains, remember not to go too fast as they fall off the
tracks (just like real trains). I can't say i ever remember my 12V trains ever
having this problem though.

A good source of information is Matthew Bates Lego Trains page
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/train_depot/homepage.htm
This is speciifically aimed at Lego Trains.
This page hasn't been updated for a while. But in the same time Lego haven't
really done anything significant with their trains either.
But basically be aware that there are three type of trains that Lego have
released: 4.5V, 12V and 9V. The 9V is the latest, but the tracks for all three
are the same gauge (size).Trying to get the older stuff may be very difficult.
Any news from Matthew Bates of late? anyone?

My Own Creation
What this means is a design of any type that isn't a standard lego set. It can
be anything, not just for trains.

The argument goes: that in real life, trains are actually wider than the gauge
that they run on. As Lego tracks are six studs apart, their trains should be
wider than six studs. The counter argument is that the entire range of Lego
Trains were designed for six wide trains such as the radius of the curves, the
design of the points etc.
It just boils down to personal opinion how you want to build anything really.
