I think the tendency for GATS is that it is more hawking than an NMRA
convention. The layouts are there as a draw, mostly, which is why GATS
was willing to pay GMLTC some pittiance, they are an excellent draw.

NMRA conventions have a lot of hawking too, but a lot of it is by the
manufacturers, rather than collectors reselling, and the layouts there
are brought by clubs to impress each other rather than as a draw.

My opinion anyway. John Gerlach would be a great voice to hear from,
he's been to a lot of shows and cons.

Do *four* shows count as "a lot"?

I'm certainly not going to claim to be an expert in this area.  All I know is
people seem to really enjoy the GMLTC layout, especially the kids.  Many times
I've heard a parent 'negotiating' with their kids - "We'll go see some other
layouts, and then come back to this one" (or something similar).  Most shows
we have people shoulder-to-shoulder almost the entire time, sometimes a couple
of people deep.  And, we try to talk to them all - unlike many layouts were
the operators just sit in their chairs looking grumpy...

At the NMRA show last Summer, we had the President of the NMRA tell us how
much he enjoyed having us there, and the organizers of both the 2000 (San
Jose) and 2001 (St. Louis) shows ask us if we'd be willing to display at their
shows.  (Unfortunately, it would cost us $2000 - $3000 to do the San Jose
show, and the organizers never even hinted they might be willing to pay for
some of that, so we won't be there.  If someone from the St. Louis show wants
us, have them get ahold of me and we'll negotiate!)

We have a show in La Crosse, Wisconsin, coming up in March.  We were there
last year, and had a great time.  It was probably 60% layouts, 30% 'selling',
and 10% 'other' - a very friendly and informal show.  I'm looking forward to
this year's show, it should be a fun time...

(...) GM/EMD DD35AX or DD40AX, no doubt. Is the cab narrow or extended? That's the distinguishing feature. (40 is extended, 35 isn't) Those trucks are steerable, I believe. The GE U50 is a B-B B-B or 4 two axle trucks. UP is notorious for (...) (24 years ago, 14-Feb-00, to lugnet.trains)
