The original books were based firmly on various railways in the UK (my
daughter was ecstatic when we visited the Talyllyn Railway in 1991 and she
got to see the REAL Peter Sam (Edward Thomas), Sir Handel (Sir Haydn), and
especially Skarloey (Talyllyn)) and the engines are almost all recognisable
as specific classes. Since the original books, though, the modern TV series
and spinoff series and spinoff books have strayed further and further from
the original (and have become more and more simplistic in language and
plot).

Exactly. Who now knows that Annie and Clarabel are bogie coaches?

This reminds me of the modeling dilemma I faced when I first started building
Thomas characters in LEGO-- do I model the prototype upon which the character
was based, or do I try and faithfully model the character itself? I ended up
deciding to model the characters, but I think that if I were from the UK, my
decision might have been different. To me, all of the Thomas characters were
just toys first; I never knew that they were based on historical prototypes.
What really hooked me were the elaborate sets for the videos. Wow! I
remember Ross and I waiting for subsequent videos to be released. We bought
them all! As a youngster, Ross couldnt get enough of Thomas; as an adult,
neither could I:-)
As it is now, we dont even display our MOCs of the Thomas characters anymore,
but show off the licensed characters in an effort to stimulate the GP to go out
and buy the line. So, WRT Thomas, I have bought into the school of thought that
sacrifices historicity for bringing in the next generation to the world of
trains.
