Hi Paul,
I like it a lot. I like the details quite a lot. I build the few train cars
that I do in 6 wide, but like to think of them as beefy six wide as I would
this. Id love to see this in dark red or reddish brown with the same
livery.

Jonathan,
Thanks! Mucho credit goes to Chris of course. I like beefy six wide, too.
This was 8-wide converted to 6-wide so I wonder if that contributed there.
Hmmm... maybe 6-wide builders should try building in 8-wide first before
converting back to 6-wide?

I am interested in how you did the gently sloping roof. I tried for the same
type of effect on the brown boxcar here:

(Thanks ++Lar for taking this picture)
I used 1x2 hinge bricks and simply affixed the tiles to them. Is that the
same method you used?
|
Very close. Chris used 1x4 tiles with 1x2 hinge bricks (with a plate in
between). This was my initial challenge for 6-wide since they dont make 1x3
tiles. I uses 2x2 hinge tops and a pair of 1x2 tiles overhanging the end. This
was so the slope would be similar to what youd get with 1x3 tiles. Of course
your solution (awesome stuff, by the way!) avoids an issue with mounting the
roof walk. In mine I can only attach the roof walk at the ends of the car. I
was concerned about this but in practice it holds up fine as it doesnt support
any load, although if you push down on the center you can make it bow down (but
easily put right).
|
I am also interested in hearing if you did any of the designing or
pre-designing of your model in brick form to see if it functions before
designing digitally.
|
Absolutely. I did a prototype several things. I never had the bricks handy to
build the whole boxcar but I did build several test articles to try out ideas.
This definitely made a difference with stuff like the roof and the doors as my
initial CAD ideas wouldnt have worked well.
|
If not, are you pleased with the results and the
funtionality of it? Do you find anything you might do differently?
|
I was cautious not to order it too soon and went through several iterations
before locking it down. I also didnt post here until I built it myself. I was
very nervous when it arrived and was pleased to find it all came together as I
hoped (thanks to the prototyping, for sure). With any design I think you can
always find something you can do differently but for the most part Im content
with how it turned out.
|
The reason I ask is that I have never designed digitally and have no
experience with it what-so-ever.
|
The CAD tools are really great for quickly trying out ideas. Chris had a black
base for his boxcar but when I added the checkerboard it didnt look quite
right. With a couple mouse clicks I got to see what it would look like with a
red base. And of course if you dont have the parts, CADs the only way to go.

Great looking Boxcar!
Best,

Thanks again!
