So... through NELUG, I have been involved in the Millyard project in the
SEE Science Center in Manchester, NH. The other day, we took one of the
engines off the track, and removed its dead motor. The motor had died
because the springs had failed (no real surprise there).

Chris-
Ive been thinking about finding replacements for the wheel contacts in LEGO
train motors. At our May SCLTC event, I spoke with a visitor about the
problem. The guys is a mechanical engineer and familiar with motor contacts
and stampings. We have followed up by email and I hope that something comes
of it. If we could whistle up a 1000 contact sets, we could keep a lot of
motors running for a long time!

OK, so Im a total 9V train noobie, having just gotten some that have not even
been run yet... yup, total n00b. But... Ive been doing model rail for a long
time. Looking at the pictures of train motors (in preparation for DCC
surgery...) it would seem to me that replacement contact wipers could be made
either by stamping or chemical etching from a sheet of berylium copper
(Phospher Bronze) and then bending to shape, again best by die stamping.
Has somebody already tried that? Am I talking out of turn, being a clueless
n00b?
MicroMark (www.micromark.com) sells phospher bronze in small sheets. For a
one-off replacement, some carful work with metal shears or X-acto knife might be
a good experiment.
