I was fooling around with my bricks today and I thought it up. If it can be done-- It’s what I’ve always been looking for: Some way in which I can integrate train axles into the technic system.... and thereby motorise stuff, apart from other wonderful new things. Comments?

I think you’re gonna have a couple of problems with it:
  1. The 2x2 round parts don’t always attach very strongly to the flange parts - and as they carry the weight and provide the traction, they will probably be prone to falling off unless you glue them. Standard 2x2 plate doesn’t look as good, but is much stronger because it has an axle hole.

Yes, I know this too. In fact my first choice WAS the 2x2 round plate for this same reason, and I didn’t think of it as being as good for the same reason. But it can easily be greebled up externally by bogie detailing, and be made to look convincing enough. At least in 8 wide ;-) (Sorry timbort :-P) Oh and I noticed that the flanges have a slightly larger circumference than actual train wheels, which lets them touch the inside of the track itself just a wee bit. I don’t suppose this might be sufficient for additional support?

  1. With just the plastic tractive surface, slippage is likely to be significant - you’ll probably have to find a way to attach w rubber band or something.

Dunno... I’m not a physics guy... but isn’t the regular train wheel entirely hard plastic as well? If that works, I *guess* this might too. Even then, the smallest size white fanbelts should go around the 2x2. That’ll keep things nicely all-LEGO. I’ll have to do some more tests.

Thanks for the feedback!

(...) Yeah but the ones on the motor (that do the actual driving) have rubber rings. Until they get worn down. So I guess it's not an issue for non-driven wheels, but your example suggested you're thinking about using them for driving too. ROSCO (19 years ago, 20-Jan-06, to lugnet.trains)
