I was wondering if you could substitute an axle pin for that 2-stud axle, to
get a little more grip, but it looks like the plates above are two 2x4
technic plates in a T-arrangement. So, theres no way the pin could click in
place. As its right on the end, you couldnt remove the top technic plate
or put 1-wide plates to surround the hole, either.

Long time readers may recall my repeated ranting against using stacked technic
plates for the receivers of the pin on bogie plates. Same issue here, in my
view.
Apparently the design may possibly have room for improvement. Having the trucks
fall away when you pick the car up may not be the best approach.
