Couplings for long overhang 4 wheeled vehicles

I am currently designing some long four wheeled vehicles
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=847126 for example) and am
having problems with the coupling design. Because of the long overhangs the
couplings need to be mounted on an arm that can pivot to allow the coupling to
be more over the centre line of the track on curves. However this leads to to
problems when pushing the vehicles as the arm moves to one side and causes
problems at the ends of straights or on opposite curves.
The problem mainly lies with the fact that a coupling on a pivoted arm has two
pivots points as the actual coupling has one built in. Some people have a self
centreing  mechanism on the arm and this works to a certain extent but does not
really solve the problem.
Ideally I need to make the coupling fixed on the end of the arm, with no freedom
to pivot, however to do so makes the arm quite bulky and the arm needs to be
able to have more sideways travel than at present, presenting new challenges to
the aesthetic (and strength of construction) design of the end of the vehicle.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Tim

(...) Have you considered using this part?: (URL) 2607 Magnet Holder 2 x 3 They are not expensive, and available on Brickshelf in large quantities. With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen (20 years ago, 8-Sep-04, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
