I'm nearly finished with my HE 4-6-0, and thought I'd share some pics. It uses 3
pair of the BBB regular drive wheels, non are blind drive wheels. And it had a
drive rods spannig all tree wheel sets.

After experimenting I had several ideas to get 3 pairs to work, all of which
were also mentioned here by others. But the only ones that would allow me to
runn  drive rods to all 3 sets was either make blind drivers, or design it so
the inside center drive wheel could be pushed in 1/2 stud while on curves. I
choose the later, as I wanted the wheels to match each other. This solution only
works of you are useing 6 stud center spacing, with 7 stud the front and back
set bind to much and tend to derail.

I used technic bricks for the wheel base, and a thin technic beam to space out
the center wheels. The wheels are mounted on 2 stud axels with a small spring in
the center between them.

If there is a beter way to build th edrive rods, I would love to here of it. I
have a limeted technic collection, but plan to swap out the U-joints with non
locking Technic Toggle Joints.

I still need to add a bit of detailing, and build the tender. And after that
convert the coach cars to 7 stud and 1 brick taller.

(...) Mat, I like the way you handled the middle wheelset. It looks great. The two stud axel with the technic triangle widgit thingy (LD part #2825) for the extra 0.5 stud is a great idea. Where, by the way, did you get the spring? The local (...) (20 years ago, 2-Aug-04, to lugnet.trains)

(...) Mine, a few posts back, uses technic flex for drive rods. That keeps the total width down. It also doesn't put any pressure on the outer wheel when the inner one is pushed in, which could make the outer rod rub. The disadvantages are that the (...) (20 years ago, 2-Aug-04, to lugnet.trains)

(...) I use 6 BBB Beta wheels in my steam train. It's a 4 6 2. When I was building the test chassie's for the trains wheels. I tried six and seven stud spacing between the wheels. I end up using seven studs. I found that it would derail aswell, and (...) (20 years ago, 3-Aug-04, to lugnet.trains)
