This is the image I posted to the "Big Ben Brick's Beta" mailing list:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/JohnG/construction/removingflange.bmp
The diameter of the wheel remains the same, by removing the flange using the
blue line as a guide allows the flange of the wheels on either side to actually
go *behind* that wheel, allowing you to move the axles closer together.
Does that make sense? Don't use my rough sketch as an exact guide - I drew it
up just to show the rest of the mailing list my idea. Ben and Steve Barile did
shape some wheels based on this idea, they said it worked great. (Pictures,
guys??)
The wheels on my Challenger are using the 'red' shape, so they're farther apart
than they could be - but they're still very reliable. Once Ben releases the
'production' wheels in de-flanged form I'll update the Challenger with them,
that will allow me to shorten it up by four studs. It's a pretty long beastie
now.... :-)
