Heres a crazy idea: how about using a black rubber band?
|
That IS crazy. It will never work!
No, more seriously thats actually pretty spiffy thinking. Figure out how to
route the band through the boiler and through the pilot and Bobs your
uncle.
One wrinkle though, there will be a tendency for the pilot to want to stay
centered if the band is taut enough on the straights to look like its a bar
rather than a droopy rope.... This may cause poor performance in turns or
when traversing switch points in the diverging direction.

How about a long rubber band thats connected both ends to the pilot, and
through a hole of some kind in the boiler? So it can slide side to side? Or
even 2 pieces of string joined but a short rubber band in the same
configuration? This may reduce the amount of stretching the rubber band needs
to do.

Now thats good thinking, Ill have to make a mock-up and have a play around,
thanks everyone. The problem with having the footplate fixed and the bogie
moving underneath (a la real thing) is one of clearances due to the size of the
Lego motor and also allowing the coupling to not have a large overhang on the
sharp Lego curves.
