No, more seriously thats actually pretty spiffy thinking. Figure out how to
route the band through the boiler and through the pilot and Bobs your uncle.
One wrinkle though, there will be a tendency for the pilot to want to stay
centered if the band is taut enough on the straights to look like its a bar
rather than a droopy rope.... This may cause poor performance in turns or
when traversing switch points in the diverging direction.

How about a long rubber band thats connected both ends to the pilot, and
through a hole of some kind in the boiler? So it can slide side to side? Or even
2 pieces of string joined but a short rubber band in the same configuration?
This may reduce the amount of stretching the rubber band needs to do.
