there is one trick you can use to get this to work reliably.
The thing you need is to use carbon spray on the wheels so that a resistor
of a few M-ohms is created. This will draw enough current for the detector
circuit to work.
product is called "blindotub KF", and is available at www.conrad.fr under
reference number 06 52 85-33
as usual you should try it before on a piece that you don't care about.
This product seemingly destroys polystyrene...
