I've just added a new view showing the bushes and more of the mechanism.
Re: level crosings, last surviving gated crossings in the UK are listed at

Wood where it all started for me. The fascination was watching the skill of
the signalman allowing the last few cars through, balancing the traffic
chaos against the demands of a very busy suburban line. Happy memories...
