Drawbridge help needed!

Hi all,

I am currently building a small drawbridge for my train using Technic
elements, but I came across a difficulty which I was not expecting to be so
problematic: the need of a "counter-weight".
I did know I was *probably* gonna need one. And that there are ways to
calculate its weight and placement. Only I was expecting the gears would
hold... which they didn't.

So, now I need to devise some counter-weights. The thing is, they must allow
the movement of the bridge, and so far all my attempts have failed in this
particular point.

Has anyone made some bridges like this, that I can use as reference? Mainly
for the *shape* to use.

Some data about the bridge:
Span: about 64 studs (previous version was 32, but was too small to be useful)
Width: 18 studs
Height: just enough to let a metroliner pass
Height *to the ground*: not defined, but as low as possible. Minimum of 8-9
bricks, to allow the movement of the counter-weight (any solution below this
limit is most welcome!).

My earlier attempts with Pneumatic cylinders failed. The use of a motor now
seems the cleverest option... but if you know different, please hint me
about it. I am really trying hard to do this bridge, and display it in
PLUG's August meeting.

TIA,

Pedro

(...) Pedro, Here's my version of a draw bridge. Its the first listing under "Bridges" on my site. (URL) a Bascule bridge based on a real one I had a picture of in some train magazine. I got the counter balance to work fairly well. I could balance (...) (23 years ago, 28-Mar-02, to lugnet.build, lugnet.trains)

(...) You can get LEGO weight elements (9936) from Pitsco. Very handy. Also, the counterweight doesn't have to go below the bridge - you can use cables with a pulley system, or something like this bridge at Constitution dock (URL) I wish I had a (...) (23 years ago, 28-Mar-02, to lugnet.build)
