Lovely pic. Very scenic. It's hard to discern details but I don't see any
striping on any of the passenger cars. Also note one car is a bit darker in
color. Given that it is early in the consist it probably is a baggage or RPO
or dormitory car. If it's an RPO or dorm it may be an ATSF heavyweight that
is painted grey (or two tone grey (1)) but if it's baggage, it may be a
"thru" (2) baggage from an eastern road with baggage and express from the
east. (the baggage may be that of passengers in a "thru" (2) sleeper farther
back in the consist)
Modeling thru sleepers would REALLY add authenticity to your train if you
chose to do it.
1 - ATSF had a two tone grey scheme that was transitional from their pullman
green scheme, they also painted some heavyweights with gray, including tromp
l'oeil striping to match the stainless fluted sides on the lightweights. You
occasionally would see these in a streamliner consist.
2 - exchanged with an eastern road (3)... passengers would board in (for
example) NYC's 20th Century Limited in Grand Central Station in NYC and
while they were sleeping (or not, depending on when they boarded in NY), the
sleeper would be handed off in Chicago to ATSF. This meant that they did not
need to unpack and change trains in Chicago. Since a transcon trip was a
several day journey this was a major convenience. Especially if they had
booked a drawing room and their maid unpacked a lot of stuff. Thru sleepers
tended to be mixed compartment cars (perhaps a 4-4-2 with 4 roomettes, 4
bedrooms, and two drawing rooms).
3 - Any one of a number of roads that partnered with ATSF, including NYC,
PRR and others. ATSF was perceived by the public as one of the best lines in
the west, despite UP's efforts with the "City of" trains. This was partly
due to the striking warbonnet scheme itself and the fact that Lionel picked
it up quickly for their O gauge electric trains. EVERY kid wanted a
warbonnet. It was also partly due to the high quality food supplied by Fred
Harvey.

NYC, PRR and others
