At the local markets yesterday I got some very old lego, including the
bottom of a box marked 113, the plastic inner tray, and a pile of lego. On
the bottom of the box were the instructions for building the carridges, and
on the sides details on building the bogies/track.

Congratulations!

Sometime in the past I have downloaded a page of instructions for building
this set, but when I compare what is on the box, and in the box, I have 2
questions.

(1) The downloaded instructions show the top of the carriage being based on
a large grey plate similar to the base, but the instruction on my box (and
this is how there were partially built) show them being built from grey 2x4
and 2x2 plates. Is there 2 versions of this set.

I have heard so before and obviously it is so, that there are at least two
versions of instructions, maybe that means there are two versions of "hardware"
too.

(2) In the box I got were partially constructed carriages, but the city
names were London, Manchester and Glasgow, and the other carriage had Royal
Mail.

Thanks for that info! I knew about the UK-version of this set, which has UK
town names instead of continental ones. But the "Royal Mail" instaed of "Post"
was new to me.

Is there even more versions, or has somebody being playing (and if so,
where did those pieces with the city names come from?).

There are at least a UK and a rest-of-Europe version of set 113. You have the
UK one.

One question back: has your 113 hook couplings with 2x2 plates or those with
2x4 studs? (111 and 112 came fore sure with the 2x2 version).

Kind Regards,

Ben

(...) Hi Ben, My 111 (from childhood) definitely had 2x4 couplings, as I never had any sets with the 2x2 ones. I no longer have the set. ROSCO (23 years ago, 29-Dec-01, to lugnet.trains)

Both the piece with the "hook" and the piece with the "hole" were based on a red 2x4 plate (1/3 brick height). And a question back. Were there any other sets with London/Manchester/Glasgow on the blue 1x8 bricks? (I'm sure I have a few more (...) (23 years ago, 30-Dec-01, to lugnet.trains)
