My suggestion would be to have a disc that people could buy for a nominal fee,
say $10, that would have all that information on it so that people would not
have to be online to get it and wouldn't have to download for 10 minutes to
find out if they like the idea.

I would be willing to take charge of a project that has either:

1.  Everyone make their own web page and I can put them on a disc that has an
index to all the personal pages.  Since we are not limited to size or download
size, we can have LARGE web sites with highly detailed photos.  Those who can
LDraw or POV-RAY their creations do, those that can't just take pictures.

or

2.  People just send me their photos and a rough outline of what they have and
a description.  I format all the items into one HUGE web site that is on
disc.  The format would match and be consistant through all "pages" of the
digital book.

I could probably do it and keep the cost down to about $10 per disc (to cover
disc, time and equipment costs).  We could even include a mini-pause database
that would have all the train sets in it.  Maybe even inventories.
Instructions would probably be too big and we would run into problems with
copyright laws.  I would like to include Track Designer and LDraw on it if
possible.

With a CD format, we could have 650 MB web page that could be much more in
depth than something on the internet.  Every year, we could update parts of it
with new ideas, software updates (if we can put on LDraw, others), updated
train set database, who knows what else?

that way if you have a model to post.. you can add to it.

I think this is a great idea!

Formatting would be of the upmost importance for the 'book' to come together
as a whole.

I would suggest the criteria be at the very least photographs in three
resolutions, followed by ldraw instructions, then POV renderings.

These files would certainly accumulate to over most folks 5 meg limit on a
web page, so who would host it?

More importantly, who would put the thing together?

I would like to help, but I am not sure in what capacity.

My 2 cents...

We (PNLTC) have discussed this also. A printed version of such a book • would be
great but costly. An electronic version sounds very do-able. How would the
submissions be accepted? On what criteria? Would they all be accepted?

Are there any ldraw experts out there that are willing to help out? I find • it
very painful to use the currently available set of tools.

BTW Some of MOC instructions are on the PNTLC sight in various forms (Long
Island RR switcher, Chessie diesel, EP2 electric)

how about creating a 9v train idea book ourselvs, if TLG does not want • to. we
could have pictures of train models, ldrawn instructions etc etc etc. i • would
gladly contribute some of my designs to such a book.

ya know a 9V train idea book isnt that bad.
if I were to make a idea book i would have a povray image, followed by a • ldraw
model, link to online instructions , and zip file of train

now someone just get a webpage.. LOL or put it here on lugnet?
if you want to seriously start this I can get a page off geocities, and
publically post user/pass who wants to contribute

one thing about it. i think that photos should not be essential. because there are people who may not be able to get photos but may be able to get ldraw designs etc etc etc. i for one have made a large collection of dat files of train related stuff (...) (25 years ago, 2-Jun-99, to lugnet.trains)
