Why is the monorail motor so special? —Rose Regner
Can anyone elaborate on BradJ's comment (at brickfest) that the monorail could not come back because they couldn't get the motor. Please! Being an electrical engineer, in the power field, I can not imagine any technical reason why a motor could not (...) (23 years ago, 2-Aug-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) The motor is not being produced, its something with the way its built. Josh (23 years ago, 2-Aug-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) No info, only speculation... but it's a complex assembly, there is a motor, it goes into a plastic housing, there is a press on gear, some electric switches, etc. Even if you had all the molds in good shape for the 3-5 pieces that go to make (...)      (...) The assembly probably is the biggest reason. The motor itelf I'm betting is the same physical motor as in the 9V train motor (every LEGO motor I have seen has actually had the same size housing, It's a very common size, I remember HO trains (...)         Re: Why is the monorail motor so special? —John Gerlach
(...) The rumor I heard was that the moulds to produce the motor housing were no longer available. I'm sure LEGO or someone else could reproduce the electric motor itself, but without the housing it just wouldn't work very well - or look very good! (...)         Re: Why is the monorail motor so special? —Richard Marchetti
(...) So what?! TLC is in the business of making moulds so that they can manufacture thousands of little plastic modular elements that comprise a supposed "system" of building blocks. I have the strange idea that TLC can and does make moulds for (...) (23 years ago, 3-Aug-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) I think you're absolutely right! The stuff I speculated about elsewhere in the thread isn't technical, it's just monetary (putting an electromechanical assembly line back together again or even recreating tooling isn't *technically* (...) (23 years ago, 4-Aug-01, to lugnet.trains)
