Fun with two 4559s and two 5542s

I picked up a 2nd 4559 and started into bashing them together. I built a new
engine using parts from all the sets, plus bricks from some Freestyle tubs
plus a couple Technic plates.

I found that one of the drop center train plates wouldn't work for the
engine, so I built the engine without using a train plate (a pair of 2x4
Technic plates works well as a bogie socket). My engine design uses both
cabs and 2 pr of the train doors from 5542. I used 4 of those 2x8 long
slopes (which mate up perfectly with the cab roof). I also rigged up a bit
of an engine compartment. I used the hinged covers from 5542 so you can open
it up and look inside (where there is a cylinder made up of most of the 2x2
cyclinders and round plates which is free to rotate on a technic axle,
almost certainly nothing like a real train engine compartment would look
like, but it adds some interest to the loco).

I'll have to get some pictures taken and up on the web. I think it looks
real nice.

I haven't done anything with the cars yet, but plan on making at least 2
passenger cars, 3 if I can swing it. I figure its worth building a drop
center flat car with some kind of impressive load so that will use any of
the drop center plates I don't turn into decent cars.

I've got an order into S@H for some parts to finish this whole thing off
(extra wheelsets, couplers, and bogie plates to round out the cars, plus
some lighting bricks and electric plates). I used practically a full set of
electric plates to wire the engine up for lighting at both ends. I'm
beggining to wish I had picked up more 5542s, they're a real good parts
source for working with the 4559.

I must say, I've been bit real hard by Legomaniasm... I'm going to have to
sell some stock to pay off my Visa bill (at least my massive buying is
starting to come to a close as I exhaust all the easily available old sets,
of course TRU Monday morning cost several hundred bucks...)

(...) Long term this is not the correct design, though. You should find that the bogie turns more freely if you use a plate in the lower layer and a hollow space in the upper layer instead of two plates stacked together. With stacked plates you (...) (26 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.trains)
